Isn't it funny that they always roll out Russell Williams every time they need an extra on the set.
What do you expect?
Great article for JAAB. It's really starting to make a difference!
R. has no shame. Like it or not, JAAB is making a difference. This town needs to be steamed and cleaned. Down with judicial politics and onward with accountability and responsibility.
And it was nice to see the paper tell it like it is too! Good reporting! THE TIDE IS TURNING!
Watch the Hispanic Bar make its move in the next year. It's about time too. Miami, bring some sanity back to the Broward Judiciary.
Looks like Dale's press conference really put you guys on the map...duhhhh
Hey Russell, this blog has made more of a difference in the last eight months than you and your buddies in the BACDL have done in the last twenty years. And, oh, thanks again, you and the BACDL did a great job bringing about the elimination of the wheel and then did nothing when the train whistle was heard (through this blog for starters) but sit by and carp. Your judge buddies can't do anything for you any more friend but make empty promises. When do you get tired of being used and abused. Man, you fell down on this one. Thanks BACDL, you've done a really great job, and now you criticize these people for finally taking a stand where you've lacked the courage to ever go. Maybe the former SPD cases you got kept you quiet. Things are going to be done in the light now buddy.
Well, at least they didn't call R. a prominent Fort Lauderdale lawyer.
Yeah, for a very good reason!
GOOD ARTICLE
fine work ladies and gentlemen!
Saw the DBR today. Bill, you gotta smile when they take your picture. Nice article.
Hiding behind the veil of anonymity is for cowards. First, I never have nor in the past have handled many SPD cases. Second I have the same problems the rest of the bar has with respect to bond hearings, denial of motions to suppress[if you read the FLW and supp. you will see some of my appeals], as well problems with certain members of the judiciary. Lastly the BACDL does not have a say in "policy making" I have no idea where you get your factual information from but the entire revamping of SPD's began with Article V. FACDL has the lobbyists in tallahassee not BACDL, speak to the politicians like your congressman and senators...when you have a problem, the BACDL's voice is heard down here not up there, we cannot scream loud enough. If you have a problem hook up with the FACDL and other lobbyists and go to tallahassee and fight for what you believe in, instead of complaining like a spoiled child. BTW complaints will generally not change the system, they will just get more people irritated and annoyed, thereyby not providing any benefit to anyone. The BACDL and the minority bar associations are attempting to address some of these problems. We already have the Chief Judges ear and are hopeful we can work together to effect some positive changes in the Broward system. Remember, for every complaint you may have about a Judge, they may have their own complaint about you.
Russell - you say "the BACDL does not have a say in "policy making" - guess what - it should and could if you guys stood up for something besides SPD fees and trying to stop the public defender from explaining to poor guys in jail why they are, etc (ERU). Miami, etc. = real criminal defense bars, not lapdogs for whatever dale and satz want.
and "BTW complaints will generally not change the system, they will just get more people irritated and annoyed, thereyby not providing any benefit to anyone" - read a history book, buddy. this is just really naive. this place is undergoing a sea change right now, because people are speaking up. it's too bad BACDL's rep is taking a hit, but they brought it down on themselves.
THE FT. LAUDERDALE AREA BOARD OF REALTORS AND THE SOUTH BROWARD BOARD OF REALTORS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FOR COLLUSION AND DECEIT....
russell who?
the only benefit I ever was told of the BACDL when I was a PD was "hey they're great to have if you're ever held in contempt" - Really? then where was this group of lacky's when Katz was jailed by Aleman?
Why didn't BACDL have the foresight to create a BLOG that would expose things like "Greene's NHI comment"? Russell's solution? Let's sit down w/ the judge and work it out ... yeah, and that does what? Expose him and let's move on.
I dont know where you were..but the BACDL packed the courtroom during the Adam Katz hearing..so much so there was standing room only...Ask Alemans P.D. if we investigated and researched a possible JQC complaint when she held Hill in contempt for being intoxicated in court. Also, Ask Mr. Gelin who volunteered to help him, and whose legal material he borrowed when he wrote the Forbes appeal.
Adam Katz, the court was packed for him, and he did not deserve it, off to vegas and abandon a client not once but twice ( also in ocnnor) then act like you are the vicitm, what about the proo guys who paid katz money and he is a NO SHOW in those divisions, rememebr you are judged by his actions also
Russell, if the BACDL had ever acted in the capacity of a real criminal defense bar instead of a mutual adoration association all hoping against hope that it's leaders would receive some benefit other than the satisfaction of being real advocates for their clients, instead of pats on the head from one of our esteemed judiciary, then it could have made a difference and acted as a deterrent to some of the judicial abuses this circuit has suffered repeatedly over the years. But rather than a group of lawyers dedicated to bring excellence to our system of justice, its existence had relied solely on handouts and resembled more of a sellout organization of the very things it's supposed to represent. Your emergence into any fray over the years has been simply to be rolled out like some dupe to put the judiciary' seal of approval on any mishap they may have created and act as their patsy concerning any argument that on behalf of the BACDL should have been argued to the contrary. The words that come to mind in this all too familiar scenario in which you've taken part smacks of hypocrisy and self interest. Try looking at the role of the BACDL objectively and not from one of self interest and self advancement and you may not like what you see there. This perspective has been expressed continually by your own members. Maybe its time for the BACDL to find another "spokes person" to express its aim and goal of becoming a real Criminal Defense Bar like we have in other circuits in this state. Think about it.
Wow, now the BACDL wants to effectuate "positive change" in our criminal justice system. Gee, you've had allot of years to come up with that one and now you toss the phrase around like you discovered it.
That's funny Russ, I thought you've been chewing Ross' ear for years
Ross always asks the same old few to respond to the press every time he's criticized. Look back over the years and your see over and over again the same people. Their voices just sound more incredulous and the excuses a little more lame. The continued lack luster support of his failed administration makes you look pretty stupid fellas. You sound llke you're just mouthing the words this time.
"You're either with us, or against us."
Not just the motto of George Bush, but the motto of JAAB. Mr. Williams has an impecable reputation in the community. Why the cheap shots? Had he ever written on here before that article? Since he obviously has views antithetical to this organization, you might as well attack him for unfounded reasons. Maybe he has the yellow cake? Perahaps he is Al Qaeda? What a joke.
Don't you mean the views of a particular poster? Bad argument. What's the cheap shot. I didn't read anything that wasn't true. I think this is a blog. Get it? Who's taking cheap shots. Sounds more like a cop out to me. Russ is an alright guy, but I don't think anybody is of the opinion that he doesn't rubber stamp the dictates of the judges. Come on, man.
I can think of a few other words to describe it. Anything to get in the paper, hey, Russell?
What do you expect from him or Ahearn or a dwindling number of flunkies? Something a little less self promoting for starters.
You could have played that one better Russell.
RUSSELL, YOU'VE MAD A BOOB OUT OF YOURSELF. If you want positive change, do something about it instead of just trying to be on the side of an outdated administration completely out of touch with the growth of Broward County. Do you consider really whats been going on to be worthy of our judges and the people of Broward? Come on. There's NO EXCUSE that you can come up with that would suffice for the actions of these bad apples. You know this and so do the people of Broward County.
actually, Russ, it wasn't the BACDL that packed the ctroom. - it was f-ing DEFENSE LAWYERS!!!!!
Even if Katz was wrong, jail is NOT an option. That is the last resort to be saved for actual contempt.
And, it was a defense lawyer who wrote that Aleman was acting like an "evil, unfair witch", alerting the public of what she was up to - so the words were strong (but it got the attention & her policy changed the next week).
I realize BACDL isn't going anywhere, but, then again, that is part of their problem.
You left out, it's never been anywhere either. Now that they can't jocky for judges favor to get cases, you have no need for a rubber stamp. Judges or on their own now.
