This doesn't seem like much compared to all the stories about judges and sport tickets from lawyers. There is a certain judge who supposedly accepted season tickets from lawyers he made fat on SPDs, according to the lore.

Everything seems to dovetail in Broward. Nothing ever seems to change.

Enough is Enough! This Broward County Judge has only been on the bench since January and already we're seeing behavior all too familiar with judges here. When are the authorities going to do something about this? Why must our county continue to suffer the outrages committed almost daily by some of these judges? What's happening here?

At least Kaplan had the sack to win his seat in an election. Too bad he was so deeply rooted in the old SPD culture. He must think judges are entitled to favors and fringe benefits because of it. The way I heard the story it's a pretty clear JQC violation. They should open a branch office in Ft. Lauderdale.

If Backman sits on the JQC I would think he has to recuse himself from hearing cases involving judges here. If he hasn't, that may be part of a much bigger problem. These guys are out of control.

Why does the Public Defender have to do the State's job when it comes to policing ethical lapses of judges? How come Satz's people never call the judges out on these obvious ethical lapses?

Double standard anyone? Justice for some, but not all?

Take your pick of judges to run against. You'd have no problem raising the funds to run a campaign. People would give anything to straighten out this mess. Give it a thought, would you?

It seems every time I visit this bLAWg I see many disenchanted comments about how judges are selling out cheap.

Perhaps we should set up a judicial auction site. It should be something like ebay.

This way lawyers on behalf of themselves and their clients can openly bid for favorable rulings, other judicial favors, SPD appointments, special set hearings and the like.

The judges can divide up the proceeds to supplement their so-called meager wages, and justice can be openly sold to the highest bidder.

Or .... we can have the JQC start cracking down on judges who get free tickets to concerts, ballgames, travel destinations and the like and make room for people who can't be bought.

I seem to recall Judge Fleet commenting a few years back, that when someone remarked he could make a lot of money off of the Whole Foods Market condemnation in Fort Lauderdale, "there is not enough money in the world to buy my judgment."

To avoid even the appearance of impropriety, Judge Fleet being the gentleman that he was, then disqualified himself from the case.

For those of you who did not know Judge Fleet, his judicial style was impeccable for the most part. He never held a grudge, was polite virtually all of the time, and only once in his entire career did he pull a gun in the courtroom --

My reminder to all who enter here. Even good judges make mistakes now and then. It does not mean they're dishonest.

Judge Fleet may have been a wonderful judge unless you appeared before him. In the mid 80s when he was a civil court judge I appeared before him to seek a child support reduction due to the fact I was unemployed. I asked the judge what was the average child support payment in Broward at that time was? I felt I wanted to pay child support but since I was unemployed at the time WHY should I pay more than the county average during my unemployment? The judges answer was he did not know what the county average was! This coming from a judge who presided over many support and support reduction hearings. He then proceeded to say that I looked like an intelligent person so I should have no problem finding a job for 25 to 30,000 per year. A fairly large salary for 1985. In addition he stated that if his son could find a job for that amount of money so should I. If I was the son of Judge Fleet, I am sure I would have not had a problem either. I do not know how many or which son the judge was referring to, But Karma has a way of coming around.I am not sure of the year but Governor Jeb Bush appointed a special prosecuter to handle a criminal case against the judges' son: Mitchell Evan Fleet charging him with GRAND THEFT and dealing in Stolen PROPERTIES, BOTH felonies!!He ALSO had prior convictions for larceny and burglary. I hope that this was not the son that the judge used as a comparison for me. I am also not saying this is necesarraly a reflection of the judge. for many parents have IDIOT CHILDREN. However what I am saying is this judge was not so fair and compassionate as many are led to believe!

Dear Karen : don and I are back into the same bad pattern that we were in before I filed for divorce against him. I was very hopeful and optimistic when you recommended Dr. Clark and then we were ordered to go to counseling with her. I hoped we could try to resolve ourproblems in front of Dr. Clarkso that they did not blow up on us again. Don refuses to go to counseling until the criminal charge is resolved, but at the same time he insists on talking about our problems from his perspective causing me to have to defend myself and resulting in a heated argument and him leaving the house.
He also says some very offensive things to me that he thinks should not bother me, like today and yesterday calling women “dickless horny broads” and that some women “couldn’t get a dick if one were cut off and given to them on a platter”
And he keeps bringing up Judge Ross, which he knows could potentially destroy or at least cast a dark cloud over me so that nobody will want to hire me. Why does he do this if he wants me to be employable? I disclosed to Donald in confidence while we were married that judge Ross had sexually harassed me by coming over to my apartment banging on my door for me to let him in and was somehow able to intimidate me into having sex with him on at least 10 ocassions. Ross told me that he had no risk because he had a vasectomy and that if I ever told anyone and it threatened his position, I would only be hurting myself because, he said, “who do u think would believe – me or you?” Ross contacted me several times after I finished law school to remind me to stay quiet. When I was with SAO and doing the Anita Hill controversy, he called to make to make some rude remarks about Anita similar to the dickless remarks I have to hear from don. This morning, Don told me that in his response to the bar grievence he is going to accuse Judge Ross of conspiring with the Miller firm to hurt him. I told him to stop bringing Judge Ross into our problems, because it will only serve to destroy me and will probably hurt him too.
I asked don if I could go to Dr. clark while I’m waiting for him to join. He said that if I did that, he won’t go to her.
I want our marriage to work and am very eager to repair our problems, but I don’t know what to do if we can’t stay calm until don feels we are free to get help.
Since the divorce allegation is dismissed and I am not represented by any lawyer, can you help me before we fall apart again? Is there anything u can suggest?

    To Anonymous who wrote:

"Glassman: is it true there once was a judge who was overtly racist in his manner of speaking?"

Too many to recall. Everyone of the old-timers used some kind of racial language at one point or another. IN more modern times, Tyson, Futch, Lee, Tedder. Even Zebedee Wright made a couple of remarks now and then.

I think on the whole they never meant it to be more than just talk. However the older preceding generation of judges were racist.

I remember Ray Sandstrom telling a story about defending a poor black man on a murder charge in the 1950's. The trial was full of racial epithets. Ray himself, poor and white from the deep south, heard all of this stuff growing up. Funny thing, he was a zealous advocate no matter what the color of your skin.

The point is, it didn't get in the way of him doing his job. However, as they say, you can't measure up the old south with the new. They were two different worlds.

Today everyone's hyper-sensitive to speech intoning racial remarks or that could be taken as racist.

Face it. White folks and black folks are bound to suffer some degree of prejudice whether they mean it or not.

There's a difference between real racism and perceived racism. Today most of it is simply perceived.

One lawyer has repeatedly said to me that she believes that any jewish lawyer appearing before Aleman has a zero chance of getting the benefit of the doubt. She swears Aleman is an anti-semite. There is no outward evidence of it, but anecdotally one could make the assertion that she is.

I don't know enough of the story behind Aleman other than to say she is or was a member of the Christian Bar Association and made a big point about her spirituality. Okay. Does that make her an anti-semite?

Like I said, you'd have to go back 40 years plus to hit up on some overtly racist judges. But there were more than a few in the old south.

What's the story here, really? I'm starting to wonder if this blog is doing more damage than good. How many attorneys or human beings for that matter always say just the right thing at just the right time? Doesn't appear that the columbine comment was detrimental to the PD's client. Really folks, you all must live in glass houses. Korda, no qualms from me, he should have known better. Why punish all the other good Judges in Broward as well, and a new Judge who appears to be a really nice guy. You start wondering who the real players are....behind the media frenzy...that's all.

Maybe judges that are paid by the citizens of this state should learn a fundamental rule: Decide the issues and otherwise keep their mouths shut. These aren't made for tv dramas where judges are acting to bring attention to themselves, or is it? Sounds like we have a number of them that just can't keep from seeking the kind of attention that gets them in trouble. Take out the insertion of their sometimes twisted personalities into the cases they hear, and maybe you won't see as many problems occurring. The sooner they realize they are not tv personalities or celebrities the sooner you'll see a return to worthy judicial behavior. Stop acting like children and start acting like judges. These public servants have it all wrong. The positions they occupy are not there to serve them, but the other way around.
