DEMYSTIFYING THE JQC SEMINAR: Friday, September 28, The Tower Club

 Judge Morris Silberman (2nd DCA)

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Caribbean Bar Association, Cuban American Bar Association, Haitian Lawyers Association, T.J. Reddick Bar Association, and the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Bar Association, invite you to a seminar focused on the workings of the JQC.

The bar associations began planning this seminar after discussing the community's need for a better understanding of the JQC process with Chief Justice Lewis last March in Miami, when he flew down to address the diversity problems plauging Broward's judiciary.

The panel is still being assembled, however, Judge Morris Silberman (JQC chair), Judge Paul Backman (JQC member), and Judge Peggy Gehl (JQC member), have confirmed.

Mark your calendars.  This should provide an interesting look into the typically secretive and confusing JQC process.

I think the JQC treats judges like any person who works for a big company gets treated. If a judge breaks the law (remote control theft, dopehead) they fire them. If it's a moral/ethical breach, nothing seems to happen. I wish they actually held judges to a higher standard than the rest of us, but that doesn't seem to happen very often.

nice to see these minority groups offer a forum where important topics can be discussed face to face. guess jaab was too busy collecting dues and doing nothing to be a part of something productive.

geez...i thought creating a new adminstration, exposing all the problems in broward county and creating a little accountability was doing something. that's way more than anybody else did in the past 30 years (right, BACDL?). you must have been a part of the problem. poor you.

that's funny... what has really changed...tobin meeting with the same old politicos and fat cat lawyers, new boss same as the old boss.
not one judge has been taken off the bench or even proven to have done something wrong....
accountable to whom? looks like no one is willing to run against sitting judges...
true this site has brought many things to light but its still same old same old... a whole lot of talk but no real results

    I agree.
Until lawyers run against judges and Mike Satz (I won't even mention Help Me Howard, he's election proof) nothing will ever change.
You think these backroom boys who have sewn this town up tight for 30 years will let it go because of some internet bitch sheet?
    Cry me a river

They've never been held accountable seemingly before this blog began exposing the often outrageous behavior of some of our fine judges either. From what I've read and seen over the past year, this little blog has cast some mighty waves of dissension against a system that was seen as unassailable before it existed. But I don't suppose a leopard can change its spots, just as familiar butt kissers can't admit anything has been done to expose a rotten judicial system without their input.

What's to demystify about the JQC? It's a body of politicians appointed to sandbag any attempt to make accountable the judges for behavior unbecoming the judiciary. Forget the rules regarding ethics, not when judges from the same circuit can ultimately decide the fate of judges accused of wrongdoing. One would think it a conflict to have judges covering for their own, but not as it now stands with the make up of the JQC. That's what creates the political atmosphere that invades the very integrity of the body. The ethnic bar associations would do better to familiarize themselves with the complaint aspects of the JQC rather than be incorporated by these same people. I find it difficult to reason why they can't seem to understand the motives of this self serving action by certain members of this panel. It should not take them long however to see this become clear hopefully. How long will they have the wool pulled over their eyes? I wonder. It takes courage to confront head-on the problems that exist within our system of justice, not continued catering to these self important politicians whose job it is to through a blanket over the only mechanism to deal with judicial complaints.

Why should the JQC have to be demystified? Why aren't the proceedings held in an open forum except to keep secret what should be made known to all with an interest? Perhaps that's the question that should be debated. This is our Justice System and our Judges we're talking about. Why such a shroud of secrecy surrounding the proceedings? That kind of proceeding lends itself to mistrust by the public. There are reasons complaints are filed against sitting judges and politics should be eliminated from the process. That's my view anyway. Judges are just people that are entrusted by the people to administer justice for the people. If they do something wrong, they should be held to a higher standard by virtue of that trust.

Does anyone know if Backman and Gehl sit on JQC hearings dealing with 17th circuit judges? Is that why nothing ever sticks on 17th judges, because the JQC is packed with friendly judges? Do they recuse themselves?

Something stinks if they don't have to recuse.

The figure is one of the lowest in state-by-state comparisons. Only South Carolina, Washington, D.C. and Mississippi pulled lower test scores than the Sunshine State.

    what is there to "demysitfy?"

let's get some answers to these pressing questions:
why do judges who fudge their applications get to stay on the bench? why is it ok for judges to treat those appearing before them so poorly?
why can judges take gifts (fish, purses, jewelry) and it be ok?
why can judges fraternize with people of the opposite sex appearing before them and everyone just turns a blind eye?

Please, JQC demistfy these things for us...inquiring minds want to know.

Before the investigative panel can hear the complaint, you must first get it past the screening personel, which I've learned are easily bribed by the very judges your complaining against!
