Catch up, they have already announced who the 12 that are going up. Guess if you dont know you are not in the know.
Who?
Not that I'm aware of.
I just spoke to Mr. Zaden's office. The names going up to the governor will be released "later this afternoon".
Any guesses?
a very quick and dirty process/almost like they knew in advance who they would send up!
Bill:
Did Jim make the cut?
"Catch up, they have already announced who the 12 that are going up. Guess if you dont know you are not in the know."
Is that you Mr. Ahearn? Former and/or current blog addict? The one who shares space with Zaden (Chair, JNC) and Seiler? Would you be privvy to information that mere mortals are not?
It must be nice to be "in the know", even if it seems highly improper.
Ha Ha!
No more speculating about people who should have put in (although I don't think there has been a post suggesting someone in particular that should have put in --- but rather just mocking those that did).
Suggested Poll - who on the list of those people that actually spent the time to submit an application didn't get an interview or didn't make it into the Top 12 should have been there?
oh no, plz don't tell me Raag's name was sent!? (It'll be anti-def. all day in that ct.). And Padowitz - the guy who the voters already rejected?! Please, NO!!!
Beilly, Destry, Haimes, Haury, Kotey, McCarthy, McCawley, Newman, Pole, Rebollo, Singhal, Topor. (Thanks to Mr. Zaden - Bill Gelin)
So at least we got one of the following: pole, sach and klit.
Ken Padowitz - rejected by the voters and JNC
A big congrats and best wishes to Pole and Singhal.
no ifs ands or butts
Has Newman ever had her name sent up before?
I guess Zeller will have to content herself with her new super very important person job.
What is the criteria for dumping almost 40 applications in the trash without an interview?
Better luck the next 8 times Nate.
Barbara M. Beilly • Matthew I. Destry
• David A. Haimes • William W. Haury, Jr.
• Phyllis Williams Kotey
• Barbara A. McCarthy
• Sigrid S. McCawley
• Stefanie Malin Newman
• Christopher W. Pole
• Carlos Rebollo • Anuraag Singhal
• Thomas K. Topor
too bad jordan didn't get in. i was looking forward to saying judge jordan jordan's jurisdictional jurisprudence justly justifies judicial justice.
Great legal minds like Jim Wells just don't stand a chance in this political schlock process, do they?
too bad this blog wasn't up and running during l'affaire stacy ross
this uninformed criminal lawyer.
Who are these people: Beilly, Destry, Haimes, Haury, Kotey, McCarthy, McCawley, Pole, Topor?
The way this process is monkeyed up I'm surprised a good man like Wells even got the interview
Why wouldn't they interview everybody? Isn't this a search for the best qualified applicants? Aren't demeanor, grace under pressure, and other intangibles that can only be gauged in person the most important qualifications? Or is this just a "who you know" rewards system? Don't the people of Broward deserve to have all interested candidates investigated to ensure the finest candidates are appointed? Is this why we have had so many JQC problems with Broward judges who were appointed?
Are there specific people from the original 63 you think would be better? Or is this just more mocking and scoffing that you will need to seek atonement for this weekend?
Or is this just more mocking and scoffing that you will need to seek atonement for this weekend?
LOL!
What???? I figured there might be other Kaplans blogging today.
Ok, Di Ioia, Zeller, Benitez, Wells, Zimet, Raudt, Lopane just for starters?
12 names - how come they didn't send 3 for each spot as usual?
Trying to make it look good, I presume?
Don't think there is anything nefarious about that. Practice is 3-6 per spot. From talking with a guy earlier this week who is on JNC in the Panhandle, it appeared that some governors wanted 3 names and others want more choice. Guess Charlie wants to have more involvement in the final selection.
Kotey and Newman would be my choices. Very good feedback on Kotey from defense attys who practiced in front of her. very fair, good demeanor. Newman has always been fair and reasonable. Best o luck to both of them.
Good luck to all of the 63
Hope Rebollo gets it. He's a nice guy that won't become a nasty little man.
Could this be the brass ring at long last for Benitez?
The brass ring would clash with his outfit and hair. I'd go with brushed nickel. But kudos to Benitez for putting his name in at all. He would have been a good choice.
I hope McCarthy gets it. She is just what this county needs. Beilly...a leapord can't change it's spots. I can't imagine how nasty she would be with a robe on. Not what this county needs. Of the choices, Destry would be my next choice. Singhal isn't a bad choice either even with the politics playing out as they have, it could be worse. Did I mention Beilly? Oh yeah, I did. God help us all if she gets picked.
Broward County: Board unveils candidates to fill two judge positions
Sun Sentinel September 21:
Broward's Judicial Nomination Commission recommended 12 candidates on Thursday to Gov. Charlie Crist who will pick two Circuit Judges to replace retired judges Larry Seidlin and Lawrence Korda.
The candidates are:
Barbara Beilly, a general magistrate; Matthew Destry, a defense attorney; David Haimes, a federal prosecutor; William Haury, a civil attorney; Phyllis Williams Kotey, a Florida International University professor and former Alachua County Judge; Barbara McCarthy, a general magistrate; Sigrid McCawley, a commercial attorney; Stefanie Malin Newman, a prosecutor; Christopher Pole, a defense attorney; Carlos Rebollo, a former prosecutor now in private practice; Raag Singhal, a defense attorney; and Thomas Topor, a probate attorney.
I agree. Why not interview all the candidates who sent in an application? They only gave 10 min. with each candidate. If this JNC is entrusted with making selections for the people, they ought to at least give an interview to anyone who sends in an application. Guess they already had their minds made up and did a few token interviews to make the thing look fair. Judges should be elected by the people not selected by the elite.
You've got a point. Previous JNCs I'm told gave all applicants an interview. That's the least they could do to familiarize themselves with all the applicants before making any selection, first cut or otherwise.
I think Kotey is a bad choice. She does not have judicial temperament as noted previously. She's not well read on the law. And, she's not from Broward County.
David Haimes??? He was in the state atty's office a couple of years and didn't distinguish himself. He then went to the us atty's office where he hasn't distinguished himself. What makes him qualified. There are plenty gov't lawyers with the same credentials out there. How'd he make it to the final 12?
I agree Beilly doesn't deserve it. Beilly only became a general master because of her relationship to judge birkin. Did they ever get married? Destry will get it. Does he deserve it? He did work really really hard for Charlie Crist. What has McCarthy done to distinguish herself? Raag is tricky. He's a nice guy to everyone, but he's been trying to fool everyone. He aligns himself with the Aleman camp and he alligns himself witht the jenne, gardiner, charlie kaplan camp, hoping neither side sees what he's up to. raag is a dangerous political animal, more of the same, not what broward needs.
Having worked with Dave when I was a PD, I found him to be an extremely reasonable and good ASA (very uncharacteristic for that office). He’s a very even-tempered and thoughtful individual, and I think he’d make a great judge. Obviously, the US Attorney’s office and JNC thought highly of him too. The only bad thing I could say is that he is a Notre Dame grad, but perhaps that is his guidance counselor’s fault.
Best of luck DH,
Dan Reinfeld
why do you say she doesnt have the jdicial temperment? I have spoken to pd's and prv attys who have practiced in front of her. they all said she is very pleasant, knows the law and is just a litle to the right but generally fair.
You're an absolute idiot. McCarthy, NOT Beilly, is married to Birken.
Dan, How long have you been practicing law? How long has Dave been practicing law? I think he needs to experience life and the legal profession before he's ready to be a judge. We don't need unproven lawyers. Those are the ones that give the judiciary a black eye. See L'affair S Ross. Cut the crap. What is Dave's political juice. He didn't get out just because is was an asa and is an ausa.
Beilly DOES NOT have the judicial tempermant to be a judge. I have been in front of her for many years. Most women attorneys I know can't stand to be in front of her because of her treatment of them and how nasty she is. She is also nasty to litigants. Just make sure you don't interupt her because the claws come out with facial expressions to match. Make sure you don't tell her you don't understand her question, see above.
If you give her a robe then she will be just what the JNC and Broward County is tired of. There is a reason she has tried so many times and hasn't been appointed. She won't run for an elected position because she wouldn't have much support. Please keep Beilly out.
Couldn't agree with you more. She tries to run her GM/HO "courtroom" by fear. So many of my clients have said wow, she hates me, you, the other side, does she even like what she does? Not good for P.R.
"L'affair S Ross"??? What has she done since being ON THE BENCH to give the judiciary a black eye. Seems like the ones that have been giving the judiciary a black eye were experienced jurists, no? Seidlin, Ross (Sr.), Korda, et al. But Nooooooo --- everything comes back to S. Ross and HOW she got on the bench, rather than what she is doing now that she is there.
I would rather have someone with less legal experience but a good heart and a good mind and a good soul and a judicial temperament than someone with 50 years experience and a crappy attitude and disposition. The law of the State of Florida says 5 years of experience is sufficient qualification to be considered for a judgeship. If age is all that matters, lobby to get a change considered.
But no,let's just keep singing the same song here.
(Sung to the spam song tune)....Ross Ross Ross Ross....Ross Ross Ross Ross....evil Ross...heinous Ross Ross Ross Ross.
Pretty pathetic.
Yah Dan -- shut your mouth....How long have you been practicing law to come up with such a stupid opinion?
I just checked the Florida Bar website for Anonymous and found out he's been practicing law since the Civil War, and is Certified in 12 different areas, graduated from Anonymous University Maga Cum Loudly, and has writen the following Treatises -- Anonymous on Criminal Procedure, Anonymous on Evidence, Anonymous of Appellate Practice.
I think that his opinion is definitely more valid than yours.
I mean, you've only been practicing just over 8 years, and tried what, 50-60 cases at the PDs office and outide? Handled how many hundreds of motions to suppress?
You should hang your head in shame for even daring to speak out and give your opinion.
FOR SHAME
FOR SHAME
FOR SHAME
(for all those on this blog who don't understand the concept....that was sarcasm).
Notre Dame, eh????? Didn't Jack Seiler go to Notre Dame??
COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT!!!!
Reminds me, must remember to take home address off bar profile.
And my main man Ron Dallas.
Dan - Don't do that.....How will I ever be able to get your present delivered.
Topor is a former asa who was a very bright , very fair guy. He has plenty of experience in private practice; would be a great choice.
What a lousy thing for Raag to shove Aleman down our throats. Maybe this time he gets his ticket for doing the christian right Republicans a solid. And he calls himself a Dem?
When has Raag been calling himself a Dem? He campaigned for Crist, is a high-up with the Broward Republicans........
To 4:19
I agree with you. the way s ross got the judgeship sucks. as a judge she's done a good job. what's done is done, move on.
Conspiracy theorist wrote:
Fake Bar Journal and DR aka Dan Reinfeld are one and the same.
Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean people aren't following you.
But in response to your theory - I haven't seen DR in years.
"I agree with you. the way s ross got the judgeship sucks. as a judge she's done a good job. what's done is done, move on."
No way. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. This isn't a job at Daddy's car dealership, it's a judgeship for crying out loud. It stinks and the JNC should be investigated to see what may have been promised or done in the past to secure the appointment.
I hope the rumors are true that she has an opponent.
(spam song)
Ross Ross Ross Ross.....Ross Ross Ross Ross......Ross Ross Ross Ross....Ross Ross Ross Ross...
come on 9:22, who's running against baby ross?
Enjoying this article, but my posts appear under my initials. The support is much appreciated, but unnecessary. Also, those stats are very exaggerated. Best to all. Dan
you people are digusting. there are people who do things to distinguish themselves, and you have nothing good to say about them, then there are people who don't distinguish themselves and you have nothing good to say about them either... get a life.
