The Levenson Reidy Exchange

As many of you know, there has been a lot of talk around the Courthouse, and in the comments section of this blog, regarding an incident in Judge Levenson's courtroom late last week.  Some highly inappropriate comments were made regarding the alleged victim of a sex crime, involving the Judge, and Assistant Public Defender Brian Reidy.

JAABLOG has obtained an excerpt of the transcript, available below.   In any event, it's my understanding the fallout from this will continue for some time, following so closely on  the heels of Mayor Naugle's perceived homophobic crusade, and Chief Judge Victor Tobin's declaration that sensitivity training is not a necessary priority for the Broward Judiciary.

Brian Reidy, a lifelong advocate for the accused, is a founding member of JAAB.  As Assistant State Attorney Alcalde pointed out, they should have known better.

That's it.   The story will hit the papers tomorrow.  They will be sure they'll to be contacting all the parties to fill in the gaps.  Read the story tomorrow and the transcript below, and draw your own conclusions.

Futhermore, the transcript of the proceedings does not reflect the off the record continued discussion of the subject between  A.S.A. Alcalde and Judge Levenson. Cudos To A.S.A. Alcalde for upholding  professionalism and discresion as befits our profession.

It is no longer in fashion to join in when a judge makes offensive comments, whether based upon race, class, gender, and/or sexual preference. The favor that curry today may cost you tomorrow.

Where oh where did all the posts go.

Could they all have been full of bad words?

Did I read the Bills follow up post correctly that he was edited by moderators of JAAB? That remarks saying nice things about Levenson being part of the new young not old boy netowrk of judges was REMOVED and edited by JAAB?

Finally this blog is exposed for the corrupt entity it is. Come on Reidy tell us the real story about you and Deborah's ouster and where all the dues went?

So how many JAABers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

    Three.

    One to screw in the lightbulb;

One to delete all evidence that the bulb was screwed in; and,

One to screw in a new lightbulb and blame any confusion on Cyberblob.

    ------

I never said it would be funny, but this thread and the removal of the original post is a real joke.

I've read the transcript over a number of times and still can't decide which part is the most offensive, Levenson's joke, Reidy's reply, or Levenson's excuse that Benny was making faces (unfortunately the transcript will never be able to replicate the intonations of the speakers). Either way, it is still baffling that our colleagues haven't learned to keep their mouths shut.

On the flip side, it is kind of funny that the 'Benny Defense' will now become the standard reply for any off-colored jokes made in the courthouse!

Bill - You are a very smart guy. Berkley grad and all.

It was only a matter of time that the other head JAABers were going to escalate their censorship from deleting negative posts to blocking IP addresses of those that criticize the BLOG to the height of hypocricy, the removal of your own article and all the comments made about it.

If this BLOG was supposed to be the media, it may have succeeded. Unfortunately, the media it decided to be was the Soviet Media Pre-Glastnost.

Congrats to those in JAAB who have taken the concept of an allegedly unmdoerated blog to its awful, hypogritical conclusion.

Wow Glass worse then making fun and degrading a underage teenage boy who was molested? I can only imagine the places you spend time.

Of course if it was Dale you would call for marching in the streets and impeachment.
Dale's comments about NASCAR, Boom Boxes etc were bad but Mr. Riedy starting this mess saying the boy was a tight end was beyond contempt.

Why judges continue to act the way they do after all that has occurred with improper statements be made on the record just goes to show how really deeply ingrained the problem is. This kind of behavior is not to be scoffed at or underestimated in it's effect.

Bravo JAAB for exposing the extent of the problem. I say file a JQC complaint on Levenson and a bar complaint on Reidy.

Look at the posts from the weekend. JAAB purposly kept the part about Riedy out of it and put it all on Levenson. Only now because the press is involved did they have to tell the full story.

Bill, first off, please come forward again and expose this blog for what it is-- again, your post has been edited. In your previous post, you actually made positive remarks about Levenson and they have now been removed. Leave it to this blog to remove positive comments about a judge. This blog has been exposed for being a smear factory due to this obviously apparent censorship. That is, censorship of positive comments about a judge.

Second, regarding your comment, Jay, the transcript shows that PD Reidy was the first to make an offensive joke, not Levenson. I'm not saying that Levenson's comment wasn't inappropriate, but just clearing up a mistake in your post.

Positive comments about a judge? How could anything that is contained within the record possible be thought of a s positive? Simple because the judge apologized about his incredibly stupid statement doesn't erase what should never have been said. Improper behavior unbecoming a member of the judiciary is what I call it.

ASA Alcalde was the only one present that had the presence of mind to realize the impact of the statements made and actually had the conviction to address the issue.

The positive comments posted by Bill earlier, which have now been deleted by JAAB, were regarding Levenson as a judge in general and as an aside to the comments regarding incident that occurred during the colloquy.

Why would they censor ANY comments made? Censorship = Zero credibility.

Howard, Feiner, Ross and Greene make bonehead comments and you call for their jobs. You own long time PD makes far worse comments and he gets nothing. Remember your guy statred the comments not Levenson. Yes, Levenson should have never followed up on Riedy joke but Brian is far worse here. Reidy never even said he was sorry until the press got wind of it. Looks like your office needs some diversity training.

Due to events beyond my control, my original post entitled "The Levenson And Reidy Exchange" was edited, without my permission or consultation, by the moderators of JAABLOG, and signed as "JAAB" (although it still says "posted by William Gelin at 2:22 p.m."). I have reposted it here under my name, in its entirety. It may not be that different in content from the edited version below, but it's important to me that my work not be misrepresented - Bill Gelin.

    THE LEVENSON AND REIDY EXCHANGE

As many of you know, there has been a lot of talk around the Courthouse, and in the comments section of this blog, regarding an incident in Judge Levenson's courtroom late last week. Some highly inappropriate comments were made regarding the alleged victim of a sex crime, involving the Judge, and Assistant Public Defender Brian Reidy.

JAABLOG has obtained an excerpt of the transcript, available below. To his credit, Judge Levenson apologized immediately and profusely for his comment, unlike other judges, who refuse to take responsibility when they cross the line. In any event, it's my understanding the fallout from this will continue for some time, following so closely on the heels of Mayor Naugle's perceived homophobic crusade, and Chief Judge Victor Tobin's declaration that sensitivity training is not a necessary priority for the Broward Judiciary.

This is a tough one for me personally. Brian Reidy, a lifelong advocate for the accused, is a founding member of JAAB. Similarly, I find Judge Levenson to be a prime example of the newer, younger breed of Broward judge, who are able to distinguish the true criminal from someone who has committed a criminal act, or from someone who is simply a non-violent victim of drug addiction. As Assistant State Attorney Alcalde pointed out, they should have known better.

That's it. I understand the story will hit the papers tomorrow. I'm sure they'll be contacting all the parties to fill in the gaps. Read the story tomorrow and the transcript below, and draw your own conclusions.
