 Judge Eileen O'Connor (Sentinel)

SENTINEL:
Eddie Sanchez/Judge O'Connor's and Gardiner's Problematic Court Deputy:
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-flbdeputy1113nbnov13,0,6893091.story

"Last time, it was a jailed defendant's pregnant girlfriend. Now, a 20-year-old exotic dancer, jailed for drug trafficking, has accused Sanchez of asking for her phone number and a date...

In his almost eight years with the Broward Sheriff's Office, Sanchez has gotten three written reprimands, one of which came with a two-day suspension."

It's not surprising that Judge O'Connor had "no comment" for the Sentinel.  When I tried to bring issues regarding Sanchez's behavior to her attention, in open court, she told me she didn't have time to hear it (despite the nearly empty courtroom), and instructed me to set a hearing.  Later that day, her JA told me she had been ordered not to set any hearings for me by the Judge (witnessed by another attorney, with the JA's knowledge, via speakerphone).

ST. PETERSBURG TIMES:
"Jurors Get Expanded Role":
http://www.sptimes.com/2007/11/09/Hillsborough/Jurors_get_expanded_r.shtml

"In an opinion issued last month, (Supreme Court) justices tweaked the state's jury system based on a comprehensive review and recommendations by the Jury Innovations Committee. A majority of justices supported giving jurors a more active role in criminal and civil trials...

Judges are now required to permit jurors to submit written questions for witnesses or the court in civil trials. In criminal cases, judges still have discretion about whether to permit questions."

"Political Disorder Involving Selection Of Chief Judge" (1st DCA):
http://www.sptimes.com/2007/11/13/State/Judges_scrap_over_ele.shtml

"Judge Wolf wrote a sarcastic note to his fellow judges, saying it was wonderful that the court was running like a backroom political system.

"It is so messy having open discussions that the full court can participate in," Wolf said.

He compared the system used to select Hawkes to other courthouses where a single judge has ruled the roost for years at a time, referring to Hillsborough Judge Dennis Alvarez and Broward Judge Dale Ross as "shining examples of long term leadership."

Hey Schweiker come here he he were gonna get Oconnonr this time I am gonna put her JA on speaker phone he he goody goody

Bill, not that you will clear this up... were you claming that Eddie did something wrong that had a negative impact on one of your clients or did you just want to rant about your personal problems with him? I seriously doubt OC would be that dumb to not allow you to have a Motion about something prejudicial towards a client, which you should JQC her for (as we know unlike Conway you wont do that). On the other hand if you just wanted to rant because you are "Bill Gelin" then she should not waste court time with your rants.

I was the other attorney on the line when the JA refused to give any hearing time at the Judge's instruction and the issue was that Sanchez was making disparaging remarks about Gelin after he left the courtroom, with Bill's client still in the box to overhear the comments. My client's father-in-law was the one who overheard the remarks and told Bill what the bailiff had said. He also made the initial complaint about Sanchez's sexual advances toward my client, Samantha Portadino. The father-in-law was justly incensed at a bailiff disparaging an attorney in court and I think Bill was well within his rights to request a hearing and to expect the Judge to take some action to control her court staff. She knew what the issue was going to be and she refused to hear him. I was shocked that the Judge refused to give a hearing time which is why the call went to speaker phone so that I could hear for myself that a Judge had refused to give a hearing regarding her staff's interference with an attroney client relationship.
