JAABLOG PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
2007 will go down in history as just another average year for the Broward criminal justice system. Really, it will. We're talking about Broward after all. They just can't help it.
So who should get the 1st Annual JAABLOG Person of the Year Award?
Let's see. Back in February, Judge Larry Seidlin became known forever to history as "The Crying Judge". What a performance. Emmy worthy maybe, but all the fake tears in the world can't guarantee a big money syndicated talk show. At least not with a pending criminal investigation into alleged payoffs, and not with a star with the shelf life of a boiled tongue sandwich from Canter's Deli.
Then "Chief Judge For Life" Dale Ross employed his usual charisma during magistrate proceedings that were, unfortunately for him, videotaped. After a slew of his crass, sarcastic, and xenophobic statements made the papers, Chief Justice Lewis hopped onto Justice One for a sit down with minority bar leaders in Miami. Hopefully he got a round of golf in on one of our fine Southland courses, otherwise it's apparent it was a wasted trip.
Lo and behold, March also saw a Circuit Court Judge, Larry "The Kaptain" Korda, busted for smoking dope, in broad daylight, in a Hollywood park. Wow! That was pretty trippy, even for Broward. After criminal charges, and the usual mea culpas, let's just say nobody really cares what the Kaptain does with his free time now.
There were other resignations. Charlie Greene chucked in the Chief of Criminal Courts title after sticking his foot so far down his throat he still had two feet on the ground. Skolnik was replaced from running County Civil, and Spechler, Lynch, and Cowart soon descended from their oh so lofty leadership positions.
The reclaimed swampland beneath our feet really shook in May after "forever" came for Chief Judge Dale Ross. Following a botched press conference designed to restore the public's faith in his leadership, and roughly one week after telling the New Times he had no intention of stepping down, Ross resigned. Following the Keystone Cops campaign of his hand picked successor Tom Lynch, Victor Tobin was elected Broward's first new Chief Judge in countless years, in July.
June saw lots of nervous smiles on our jurists faces when attorney Chris Roberts fingered Judges Zack and Seidlin for some major improprieties, involving alleged gifts and monetary payments. The Miami State Attorney is still investigating the claims.
Judge Williams blew the whistle on the sham Diversity Board in July. A nifty little power struggle ensued with Williams giving some powerful and surprisingly candid quotes, and Acting Chief Judge Mel Grossman seeming as out of touch with modern Broward as his advanced age would imply.
In August, Skip Campbell formed the "Judicial Uplift" Committee. Broward's keenest pro-development minds came together to school our errant judiciary in all things politically correct. Still no word on their progress or success, though approval for a new billion dollar judicial Taj Mahal is still being withheld.
Various blips and bloopers kept things percolating, until dual grand finales came in rapid succession. Sheriff Ken Jenne, the one time object of many a cooing judges' adoration, after resignation and indictment, was sentenced to prison in November. Judge Aleman was publicly tried for "arrogant and discourteous" behavior in December (the jury's still out on that one). Ace criminal defense attorney David Bogenschutz, counsel for Jenne and Aleman and other high profile defendants, showed everyone why he is the embodiment of what a true defense attorney should be. Whether drug crazed murderer, mob hitman, child rapist, or public official, every client must be provided the full scope of defense afforded under the Constitution, no matter how repulsive, hypocritical, or devious the client may be (so long as they pay).
The last JAABLOG star in consideration is attorney Sean Conway, currently being persecuted by the Florida Bar for criticizing Judge Aleman in layman's terms. The man had the courage to speak his mind and sign his name to it. Good luck to you, sir. As the song goes, "Mister you're a better man than I".
So, who is the recipient of the 1st Annual JAABLOG Person of the Year?
DRUMROLL PLEASE ..... AFTER CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF THE MANY QUALIFIED CANDIDATES,
IN A HOTLY CONTESTED FIELD, THE WINNER IS ...... DALE ROBERT OWEN ROSS.
HIS LEADERSHIP HAS MADE BROWARD WHAT IT IS TODAY.
THE PRIDE OF FLORIDA. INSPIRING TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN ALL OUR CITIZENS.
AND WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, PLEASE ACCEPT THIS HONOR WITH OUR GREATEST APPRECIATION.

Judge Dale Ross
Winner, 1st Annual JAABLOG Person of the Year Award

Congratulations to Mr. Gelin for an excellent choice, as it is clearly deserved by Judge Ross, given the FACTS that support him as the recipient.
Now, what's the over/under as the number of days it will take for The Florida Bar to serve you, Bill Gelin, with a formal Bar complaint.
I'll start the wagering at 12 days. Good luck!
Blessings, Jack Thompson, Attorney (for now)
Ross Ross Ross Ross, Ross Ross Ross Ross........
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Damn Was hoping for cyberblob or ratboy.
Ratboy...he exposed Jaab dumping reidy and being a phony non for profit
Great choice. Really the hands down winner.
Don't think the ratboy is in consideration for these things any more.
marilyn would like to award him with her favorite rapist of the yr award
oh c'mon. leave him alone. he's not ratboy anymore he's coverage-boy.
Should have gone to Roman Maroni you fargon idiots
We sure knew if Bill was not going to pick himslef he sure was not going to give it conway. Conway deserves it he has practically brought down a judge and is fast becoming a first amendment media star. Conway has brough far more worldwide attention to this blog then Bill ever did. As usual Bill can only fall back to kicking the dead horse named Ross. Do the right thing Bill suck it up and give Conway the rightfully earned MOY award
You guys forgot Levenson
Clear choice as the leader of the pack who met with its demise! Bye-bye Dale!
Great choice. Really the hands down winner.
Who's the fella Jack Thompson? He should be nominated. Sir Post-A-Lot. Was he the one accused of stalking other firms? Genius.
I gotta tell ya, being stalked is quite flattering. The attention. Plus, great first name. Plus he always signs his name. Making him the unofficial JAAB Head of the year...

Staling other law firms? Naw, sending the Bar complainants letters is not stalking. The entire Tew Cardenas law firm brought the Bar complaint against me. I figured all the lawyers ought to hear the truth. Heaven forbid that lawyers hear the truth.
Now, as to real stalking, read the DBR piece re Tom Tew.
But nice try, Mr. Anoymous Coward Poster!
Jesus Loves You and I'm Trying To,
Nonanymous Jack Thompson
Dear Jack,
I accidentally ate the baby Jesus. I thought it was an animal cracker and not part of a Nativity scene.

Dale truly deserves the credit. His loose, fitful, if not at many times arrogant attitude befits the man of the award.
However, despite Dale getting the credit, I think you should look at the man behind the throne. After all, Dale is merely the big, green monster at the end of the yellow brick road. He is not the puppet-master, but the puppet.
Before we all sing, "Hale to the Chief"; as Dale departs 2007 as the underling to Vic Tobin; we should consider the man who put Dale on the thrown oh so many years ago.
Just look at who was on the JNC back when Dale was elevated to Circuit Court judge. Just look at when Dale switched party affiliations. And you'll know.
ahhh the bitter old queen of a court reporter speaks again. Hating dale doesn't have to do with him causing you to lose your monopoly over count funded court reporting work years ago does it? So where do we find this oh so doubtfully interesting information you hint at? not on google? Please tell us please please please.
@!@
Oh hater. Did you just come back from vacation and see that nobody missed you while you were gone?
i believe the fee which that court reporter wanted and stood ground for was finally given into by that chief judge. once the contract was signed, that court reporter turned over the courtrooms to another. smart move, wasnt it.
thanks marsh
To In The Glass:
Ross switched party affiliations? Please illuminate. I would have thought he was a dem to stay elected in Broward (was he a dem when he ran against incumbent judge Chris Roberts too? Is anyone really running against his daughter?) I would have thought he must be a republican when Bush appointed his daughter. Do you know if he really switched parties? And are you alluding to Bill Scherer or someone else?
The big fish in the one time small pond smells rotten now.
Couldn't have given the award to a more deserving old dog than Dale! His moronic behavior over the years destined him to be the big winner in this past year's sweepstakes trophy. And Lynch and Spechler are still smarting over the whole deal. Can you imagine them thinking it would go any different for the old dog or them? Talk about being out of touch with reality. Still time to seek redemption. Start with a whopping apology to all the citizens of Broward County for the years of abuse you suffered upon them in your sorted distortion of justice. Maybe, just maybe, Jay, you won't go to the hot plate where things never, ever get any cooler.
marilyn wants to award him the smallest rapist of the yr award
My, what beady little eyes he has.
The better to judge you with?
Dale needs to bale before he suffers the same fate as Jelly Jennie. Talk about a bad apple in a crate of bad apples!
as soon as he can retire he is gone. he is keeping low profile now. maybe after he retires he will sue marilyn and benitez and butcher pa for what was said about him raping her over and over. u see we all know no one could rape marilyn, but she has done her share of raping, drugs and her poor children
Dale always was a sort of medical oddity when you take the time to peruse his less than illustrious career. A man who couldn't pay the check as an attorney, then early turns to judicial politics and surrounds himself with equally talentless underlings early on. Then due to lack of desire and talent within our judiciary he managed to stay on in the post, keeping an all too tight grasp on everything except his sanity and losing any semblance of humanity (albeit in very short supply in his case) to the overriding ego and ambition of an intellectually stunted Lilliputian. Hats off to those that took him down. You've done Broward and our stingy judiciary immeasurable good, even if they don't know it.
a man with wisdom. not easy to take down a judge, they are immune to just about everything even the medical problems marilyn carries.
rare to see judges get punished - they just retire and another judge sets up shop. jqc hey to them it's ur perception against theirs. then we have the bar that goes after u if they have a grudge against u or if someone can climb the political ladder. anyone no how to change this system
Can't think of anyone who deserves the award more than Dilly Dally Dale. The three D's could stand for someting else too. I'll leave it for you to figure it out. Glad he's gone.
"intellectually stunted Lilliputian"
ha ha!
Could we have some nominations for worst hair piece seen at the courthouse?
Ricardo Reyes
DALE and JAY look like the twins on the porch in DELIVERANCE....... except that their hands are out and they are always whineing.
