Jay Hurley is not qualified to be a circuit or county court judge. He worked at the State Attorney's Office and quit before getting fired. While in private practice he has not done anything to distinguish himself.
This JNC continues to show bad judgment. I think it is time for the Governor to shake up the composition of this JNC. It definately needs new blood.
I have faith that the Governor will do the right thing. Everyone knows Jay Hurley is the Governor's friend, that is not a good reason to appoint him. The Gobvernor should only appoint him if he is qualified. He is not. Hopefully, the Governor will reject him and the JNC will stop playing politics in a county that has has serious problems with judges.
Governor Crist's first four appointments to Broward's bench have been great. Let's hope the Governor continues with great selections. This means picking someone qualified, not Hurley. Picking Jay Hurley will smell of nepotism, corruption and rank politics.

Rank politics? Oh come on. Scratch the surface and every appointment has a connection to the Gov. That's politics and that's life.

I like Jay as a person, but I have to agree with 9:49 and say there's no way he's qualified. Moreover, aren't we assuming the new appointee will take Spechler's spot in Civil? That makes Jay even LESS qualified.

Any lawyer with 5 years is probably qualified in the legal skills department for a county slot. It's not that complicated.

Now it is important to bring life experience to the bench, and Hurly has that too closing in on 50.

Hurley is a schmoozing fraud who already thinks he's an elitist...couldn't imagine the nightmare he'd be in a robe. The man doesn't know the law well enough as an attorney & that's not going to change just because he is put on the bench. He's the worst choice out of the 6, by far.

eeny, meany, miney, moe: Which one on the list is the first to go? No one's said a thing about Chris Pole who is the most qualified of the bunch and should've been considered for a circuit seat. If he lacks the political clout to get the seat, too bad. He'd be an asset. Parking a fire engine in front of the Courthouse qualifies you for appointment to the Clownhouse not the Courthouse. Not to mention the scantily clad dollies that ride his engine in the Toy Run parade. Oh the Wolf in lawyer's clothing! Beware, black robe fever about to hit!

This is the tip of the iceberg into the alleged criminal wrongdoing being performed by the public defender finkelstein. Finekstein quickly admits that Michaelson has working on the help me howard show, whereas in an earlier Sun Sentinel article he states that 2 people at channel 7 did the research, this is why it is a conflict for finkelstein to hold two jobs, how does he negotiate salary with michaelson for channel 7 when he is also his boss at the public defender's office, this just smells. Does michaelson list this income on his tax returns, does finkelstein list this on his tax returns as expenses for the help me howard income of $30,000. If finkelstein is so open and above board why didn't he allow michaelson to speak directly to the media, why is he shutting michaelson down, but under subpoena michaelson will be forced to tell the truth, and other employees who now feel empowered to tell the truth. We all know this considered criminal activity and should be flushed out. Michaelson's previous and present day secretaries need to be looked into. There are many employees past and present in the public defenders office that need to be spoken to in a confidential manner, because some are afraid of retribution, these employees are more than willing to open up and tell the truth, they have been waiting a long time to come clean. It is likely to show a pattern of criminal acts led by Finkelstein. The state attorney will continue to prove to the community that he has the guts and fortitude to pursue this matter whereever it may lead.

Jay Hurley lacks the integrity to be a judge. When he was looking to run against Judge Julian for like two seconds in 2002, Dale Ross and Paul Backman threatened Hurley that he's never get another SPD appointment again for the rest of his life. Hurley called Buddy Nevins and told him of the threats, which Nevins printed. The JQC then opened an investigation of Ross ...... and Hurley totally folded and said he didn't remember ever having any conversations with Ross/Backman on the SPD issue or on his possible candidacy. A totally spineless loser!!!

Don't think that either Mr. Scherer or Mrs. Mercer need to be the ones that keep Douchechill Hurley from the bench this time around. His inclusion was a courtesy at best.

Hurley is at best a 1 in a 1000000 shot this time around. It would require everyone else getting a DUI this weekend and being arrested wearing no pants.

Honestly, I don't get all the ragging on Hurley. Sure, he might not be the MOST qualified out of these six, but that doesn't mean he's UNqualified. Seriously, as 11:32 says, being a county court judge is not generally that complicated. He'd certainly be better than some that are already on the county bench...backhanded compliment though that is.

Chris Pole is totally qualified. Has practiced civil and criminal. On the civil side, it has been more than just cursory practice... has done insurance defense/coverage defense... can more than handle the day-to-day issues in either criminal or civil cases. He treats opponents with respect, knows the law and shares the law with opposing counsel and court. I hope his time has come.
