APPLICANTS SOUGHT TO FILL VACANCY ON FLORIDA SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission announces a vacancy on the Florida Supreme Court created by the resignation of Justice Raoul G. Cantero III effective September 6, 2008.

According to the Constitution of the State of Florida, each of the state's five appellate districts must have at least one elected or appointed Supreme Court Justice who is a resident of the district at the time of his/her original appointment.  Based on the court's present composition, Justice Cantero's seat will be an at-large vacancy.

Applicants must have been a member of The Florida Bar for the preceding ten years and a registered voter.  Applications may be obtained from the Florida Bar's website:  www.flabar.org.  Eleven copies of the completed application with attachments must be received by Mr. Robert S. Hackleman at Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A., 450 East Las Olas Boulevard, Suite 1400, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2008.  The commission encourages the submission of a photograph with the application and discourages applications in binders.  If you are applying for this vacancy as well as that occasioned by the resignation of Justice Kenneth B. Bell, please note it on the application. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Members that will be serving on the Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission as of July 1, 2008 are: Arturo Alvarez, Chair (Chair term ends July 1, 2008), Miami; Robert S. Hackleman, Vice-Chair, Fort Lauderdale; Candace Duff, Miami; Andrew E. Grigsby, Miami; Howard Coker, Jacksonville; Martin L. Garcia, Tampa; Kathleen Shanahan, Tampa; Jason Unger, Tallahassee; and Katherine W. Ezell, Miami.  Any questions should be referred to the Chair of the commission at (305) 461-5100.
