BUT FIRST, AN IMPRESSION (old news article from several years ago)http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1073944822520

Dozier isn't the only Broward JNC member whose conduct has raised concerns. Judicial candidate Pedro Dijols said he was asked by Broward JNC member William Scherer during an interview last year to do an impression of former Broward County Judge Zebedee W. Wright, who's African-American. Dijols said he did not find the request objectionable, so he did it.

According to Dijols, everyone in the room laughed except for Dozier. The Pompano Beach minister confirmed the incident but declined to comment on it. Scherer first told the Review he wasn't sure he asked Dijols to do the impression, but then asked a reporter whether the request was inappropriate. He declined to comment further. Wright did not return a call for comment.

"They were just trying to instill some levity in the interview," Dijols said. "Some judges on the bench take themselves too seriously."

When told about the Dijols incident, Carol Licko, Gov. Bush's former general counsel who now serves on the Judicial Nominating Procedures Committee, was silent for several seconds, then expressed disbelief.

"That's hard to respond to," she said.

Licko said, however, that some issues in the state judicial selection system go beyond Broward. She said she often hears reports that candidates around the state are being asked whether they can balance maternal and judicial duties. "There are certain things you don't ask, and in general that's not an appropriate question," she said.

If you want to send a msg to the Republicans here is your chance.

Does Republican Party endorsement help or hurt judicial candidates?

    > Posted by Anthony Man at 9:35 AM
The Broward Republican Party is supporting four of the judicial candidates up for election next week, information that might not help them with the county's Democratic majority.

The elections are non-partisan, so anyone - Democrat, Republican or independent - can vote in the judicial contests next week.

Democratic turnout is likely to be as good or better than normal because there are a lot of high-profile party primary fights for county and legislative offices.

Republicans, by contrast, don't have much going on: a single state representative primary and an internal contest for state party committeeman. In other words, not a huge incentive to get to the polls.

So if Democrats who will be going to the polls figure out who the Republicans want, that could be bad for those endorsed candidates.

"From a political perspective, it certainly doesn't [help them]," said Broward Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar. "From a Democratic perspective, it's the gift that keeps on giving."

Republican Chairman Chip LaMarca, who sent the endorsement e-mail, said he wants to encourage members of his party to get to the polls on Tuesday by showing them there are important things for them to vote on.

"We have people who we're supporting," he said. "If we don't get the message out to Republicans they're not going to get out and vote."

He said he didn't buy the notion that the Republican endorsement would hurt the candidates in question. "There's names on palm cards from Democrats who would include Republicans and Democrats."

    Here's LaMarca's e-mail:

To All fellow Republicans, With the August 26th Primary just days away we are recommending the following candidates in the following races. State Representative - District 97 - Todd Goberville State Committee Person - Ed Kennedy The following recommendations are for the non-partisan judicial seats. All recommendations are from the Republican Party alone and were not sought out by the individual candidates. Circuit Judge 17th Judicial Circuit, Group 3 - Pedro E. Dijols Circuit Judge 17th Judicial Circuit, Group 34 - Kim Mollica County Court Judge, Group 18 - Julio Gonzalez County Court Judge, Group 27 - Catalina M. Avalos Chip LaMarca, Chairman Republican Party of Broward County
  • 8/22/2008 11:59 AM NO VOTE FOR DIJOLS wrote:
Dijols' behavior is truly despicable. If that is indeed the case, and I have no reason to doubt it, he should be removed from the bench immediately. Broward has see enough of this type of behavior from its judges. There comes a point where an example should be made to restore confidence to our judiciary. Just how much longer is this behavior to remain be permissible? Isn't Broward's Judiciary the biggest joke in the State already? I will not now vote for Dijols under any circumstances.
  • 8/22/2008 12:27 PM Non-partisan wrote:
To: 11:43 Judicial races are strictly non-partisan. Mitch Ceasar, Chip LaMarca and you should keep your mouths shut regarding the judicial races and partisan politics. The 2 are absoltely mutually exclusive.
When you throw out the partisan politics, the bottom line is as follows: Renee Goldenberg, Catalina Avalos and Julio Gonzaalez should be retained notwithstanding their political affiliations. Pedro Dijols and Bernie Bober are both qualified to be judges. Mardi Cohen is completely unqualified to be a judge and should be rejected by the voters. Likewise, Ian Richards, Ellen Feld and Kim Mollica are not qualifed.
The aforementioned would help the Broward County Judiciary continue on the right path, after some years of turbulence. Hopefully those judges and those days are behind us.

from the first minute the pedro donned his robe, he started calling himself "your honor."

this guy should be removed from the bench. the nerve of him to imitate a fellow african american judge to appease an anglo-saxon interviewer. shame shame shame.

Pedro, besides being a good lawyer and judge, is very charismatic and very funny. He imitated some of the judges, like Zebedee Wright and Lenny Fleet. Pedro did these imitations with the knowledge of and consent of these judges. Zeb Wright and Lenny Fleet love Pedro and strongly endorse him. Both think it is very unfair that Bernie Bober and Mardi Levey Cohn are running against him because as an hispanic, he is perceived as an easy target.
All this talk about partisanship in the judges races is being done by democratic operatives hiding behind the cloth of anonymity.
In any event. Bernie supporters and Mardi Cohen (no one is supporting her) need to cut this out or subject themselves and their candidates to elections complaints.

Just got the new mail piece from Catalina, she does the usual darken up the black guy photo and put it next to yours. I have seen Richards before he is not that dark. Interesting how Catalina whines about how she was targeted because she was hispanic then pulls a stunt like this. Is this not racial Judge Avalos?

What? Judge Fleet "strongly endorsed" Pedro Dijols in this election? And he thinks it is "very unfair" that Bernie and Mardy are running against Dijols because he is an Hispanic? Forget the fact that Bernie is Cuban - are you sure of your facts? I don't believe you.

As a hispanic voter I was shocked an saddened that Judge Avalos had to resort to a racially charged mail piece where the picture of Ian Richards is darkened. I have met Mr. Richards and he is much lighter then this ad portrays. Judge Avalos claims that she is being targeted becuase she is hispanic. You did not have to resort to race to beat Mr. Richards. Sadly you seem to have learned your campaigning from your backers like Mr.Lamarca from the Broward Republican Party. Its truly a sad day for hispanics in this County.

How sad to try to compare what Mike Kaplan did to the Avalos piece. The photograph she used was the one he submitted to the sentinel, which was NOT a color photo. Nothing darkened on it.

How about focusing on the fact that Ian Richards hid himself from 95% of the voters in Broward County. Or that he hides the fact that he has an interracial marriage from the african-amercian community he campaigns in.

He picked her because of her hispanic surname "Avalos". He's campaigned in the black communities and not in the white ones, since he is black. Hoping that white voters will think ian richards is a white name.

Why did Ross and company fight this idea for so long? Were they purposely trying to clog the jails and the courts? Did they want clogged dockets so they could get more judges from Tallahassee for their fiefdom? Or were they simply incompetent shortsighted boobs who cared more about their ability to say "no" than to help Broward County? Whatever the real reasons we are better off without them.
