Cheers to the few and proud that contributed to Bernie's successful campaign. It was clearly going to be a tough run given that the incumbent threw $200k of his own money into the race (we're yet to see how much of his own money he actually spent yet) and Bernie had about $15k to do it.

So here's to those in the legal community that gave to him instead of taking the easy route to support the incumbent.

GO BERNIE GO....KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM!!
  • 8/27/2008 5:56 PM THE MIRROR HAS SHATTERED wrote:
The mirror that Broward Judges have been addicted to for many years today shattered as three incumbents fell in close political combat.
They certainly seem to have been affected over the years with a Narcissus Complex that has kept them staring at their own reflections and little else since taking office, all of whom were appointed to office with very little experience but that they fit the profile of being minority applicants. Today Broward decided it was time for a change from the arrogant, discourteous and often highly questionable conduct of some of its judicial officers to the tune of 3 now former judges who must now look for employment elsewhere besides the lofty positions they have occupied for their relatively short tenures.
The time has come it seems for a more sober look at a judiciary that has been viewed by many as a club of self satisfied, condescending buffoons interested only in the idea that they were "appointed/anointed" to office for some perceived merit they possessed somehow putting them a cut above the company.
That feeling has been dashed as challengers took the field at the end of the day, proving at last that Broward's Judiciary is no longer invulnerable to opposition.
Progress is on the move and has swept from them what they truly felt was their God Given Right to remain in office until retirement.
The real reason: The cloud of voter discontent that has gathered and growing at the waste that has become The Broward County Judiciary.

Can someone explain why the judicial election was during the primary and not the general election in November when many more people vote?

I think we could have taken out Goldenberg out too if the voters were more representative of the county. The general population is clearly anti-incumbent with good reason.

They can both get jobs with satz or the AG. As far as the election, it's always at the primary date and runoffs are held at the general election date. Voters can get off their fat asses on either date if they want to, but they are just too lazy. This minority group needs to prove they can win elections before whining about lack of appointments.

If Lamack had won the whole Sheriffs Office would have become like Hollywood. That's something that's almost too much to imagine with all the corruption down there. Besides that, Sprinkles will have to try another tact now that he's lost another ploy to regain respectability. Glad the voters saw through that and Dumped the Lamack Pack. See ya at the beach surfer boy!

With friends like Judge Williams, what else could Richards hope for? Why did you have to prove what everybody already knew Judge Williams? That you would trade in politics to protect sitting judges before you would help one of your own? Doesn't sound too cool to me. Me thinks you've made another bad mistake. Get it straight. Do what you know is right, not what the rest of the judges expect of you to circle the wagons every time one of you is opposed. Really bad form.

I worked at a polling place yesterday that has six precincts. I can tell you that the voting public has no idea who the incumbent judges are; however, they do know which are republicans and which are democrats. This is a democratic county and mostly a democratic primary, therefore the Republicans got voted out.

Also, three out of four of the incumbent judges do not have significant experience running a campaign. Judge Goldenberg was elected two terms ago and she had a base that came back to the polls to vote for her. The other incumbent judges did not have that base and were on pretty equal footing with the other people running against them.

I don't think this was a Hispanic thing as much as it was a party thing even though the judicial positions are non partisan.

Now that they have experience campaigning and some name recognition, the judges who lost yesterday will likely do well in future elections should they choose to run.

I'm sure it's the same thing in Dade when a Gonzalez beats a Shapiro or something like that and the hispanic vote goes 90/10 for Gonzalez. That's not a hispanic thing either.

There are a number of judges who deserve an opponent, none moreso than Cheryl Aleman, who is a horror and nightmare to appear before (if you can even get a hearing).

It would be fitting for her to lose o the lawyer with whom she has battled the most (a la Judge Wennert in Palm Beach).

Draft Sean Conway to run againat Aleman.

You can raise enough money to pay your filing fee and run a respectable campaign.

Sean Conway is a good name for Broward voters.

Aleman has lost more support from the bar since her move to civil. Probably only A-turd and a few in the old crowd wil stay by her side.

Sean should announce his intentions right away.

Nobody was more interested in the poll results than Avalos and Dijols who are both still wondering what went wrong. After so many years of Broward Judges facing no opposition, a new age has beckoned the attention of would be judges in Broward.
All sitting judges are now game to being ousted from office by merely fielding a qualification fee. And there seems to be so many that are vulnerable to opposition for a real lack of judicial temperament that continues to hound them to whatever division they are transfered to.
What's the old saying: You can run but you can't hide? I think a few of them are finally getting the picture after yesterdays upset. All I can say is it's about time.
