PLAN FOR WHAT SHOULD BE YOUR GOLDEN YEARS

For a filing fee of $5,803.20, you may win a minimum annual retirement benefit
of $28,725.84, payable from your 62nd birthday until the day you die.
Guaranteed by the State of Florida.

Judges earn $145,080 a year for circuit, and $137,020 for county.  Public Defenders and State Attorneys earn $153,140 per annum.  They earn the maximum retirement pension multiplier of 3.3% times years of service, compared to 2% for a government lawyer.

To compute a judicial retirement package after a single term of six years, multiply the number of years (6) x the multiplier (3.3), and you get 19.8%.  Now calculate the Average Financial Compensation figure, which is the average of the best five earning years.  In a lawyer's case, it would typically be the last five years of service. For a one term circuit judge, it is the same as the salary.  So, 19.8% x 145,080 provides a $28,725.84 annual retirement benefit.  If you live twenty-five years from age 62 to 87, you collect $718,146 in total, or
$1,588,626, including the six years of salary.  Not bad for six years work.

The plum gets juicier the longer you stay in office.

If you last just two terms, you get $57,451.68 annually, or $1,436,292 from age 62 to 87, or $3,177,252, including the twelve years of salary.  And so on.  If you have prior government service or go back to a government job after a judgeship, you also earn additional benefits accrued at the lower 2% multiplier.  At the extreme, if you last as an elected official for thirty years, you accrue a 99% multiplier and bank your whole salary in retirement.

There is also the DROP program, an incentive by the State to induce early retirements.  If you last 30 years, you can "double dip" by collecting a deferred pension benefit and full salary for an additional five years, until mandatory retirement.  Extreme examples of fat retirement packages include State Attorney Mike Satz, basically working for free at this point without a DROP, and former Public Defender Al Schreiber, whose DROP came with a large lump sum deferred pension payout and nearly his full salary for life.

It's awfully hard to last that long these days. But with business slowing due to the economy and the loss of court appointed work, why not take a shot at a good salary and a guaranteed minimum $28,725.84 a year in retirement for only six years of work?

Take a look at the upcoming races. August 26th, or VB DAY, taught us judicial races do not hinge on finance or endorsements.   Everyone who wants to run should be encouraged to do so, especially against the actors who continue to support the morally stagnant results of Broward's senseless, out of proportion drug policies.  The more races the better, to split the incumbents' support base and increase the chances of the challengers.  It can be done.

If you're smart, you can win.
Start planning for your family's future now, and fix Broward County's broken criminal justice system at the same time.

WOW!! This helps explain why Judge Dijols is fighting so hard to win a chance at keeping his job. As an appointee, he has served only four years. Does that mean no pension?

DiJols worked as a asa, so he should be vested and the years of service would get stacked on top of his state attorney years. Just that the 4 years would be at the higher percentage. He then would get the avg of his last 4 years pay times the total percentage. He's set.

All Broward judges suck. They should all get opposition. They are our enemies. My job is secure now for the next four years. With the help of JAAB and Bob Norman, I will try to get as many of them as I can in trouble. And encourage my people, well the mediocre ones anyway, to run against them.

Maybe an Avalos style campaign flyer? Of course, if it backfires, it might seriously impede one's chances of being reappointed.

    Let's be careful out there.

The Governor only makes $132,932 a year. Legislators make far less than judges too.

They should term limit judges or cut their salaries.

The problem is that many of the lawyers in the legislature want these judicial salaries high so they can become judges after they are term limited out. They call in some favors and ride the judicial gravy train into a high paying retirement.

    All part of the oinkfest.

This piece certainly provides lots of incentive to run for a judgeship instead of waiting around like a lemming to be picked by the powers that be to then be laughed at by the locals that are the governors flavor of the day.

One would hope that the ones there now would not have to be threatened by the enlightenment of their pension packages in order for them to stop trying to imprison every non-violent defendant that steps in their courtroom or condoning it from the State.

All you have to do is go to the Florida Department of Corrections web site and put in the proper parameters in the filter to find out how many non violent offenders are being incarcerated for absolute garbage.

As for the DWLS cases where the state is asking for 15 days jail when the defendant has already gotten his/her license straightened out, my goodness, did you not get enough hugs when you were growing up.
