TEAM KULIK 2010

 Balancing the Scales

Kevin Kulik notified us he's putting together a list, and checking it more than twice.

He is currently vetting ten candidates for the 2010 election season.

"They're coming out of the woodwork," Kulik says, "after 2008, everyone knows how easy it is to win a judgeship."

We inquired if some of the more established names would also draw opponents in 2010.

His answer: "Bet on it."

Kulik is actively seeking more interested parties.  His team is analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of judges of all backgrounds, in order to match hand picked challengers who have the best shot at winning.  No financial commitment is necessary, but dedication of energy, time, and spirit is a must.

Why not give it a shot?

Help change the outmoded Satzian world view that dominates Broward's Criminal Justice System while earning a comfortable retirement benefit
after only a single six year term of office.  If you don't do it now, you'll kick yourself later.

                                                            CHANGE IS NOW

Warning it is not as easy as you think to win a judgeship. You are making it easy for sitting judges to win by opening up your big mouth. You are practicing the same old model of politics as years gone by. Remember the people who won in 2008 are not politically connected. They were mostly unknowns who plan like crazy and organize massive grassroots campaigns. You will see a hint of this on 02-06-2009 at 1:00 pm at the Broward main courthouse.

Truth is Bernie Bober had name recognition since his brother is Mayor of Hollywood. Feren and Ehrlich, both extremely politically connected and clueless about judging.
Ellen Feld connected to the Condos.
You don't know what you are talking about. Those that lost, lost because they were caught off guard and never got their sh-t together. LISTEN TO ME GOOD 2008 WAS A FLUKE.
Having said that I hope every sitting judge gets an opponent.

Anyone can go after the low hanging fruit with the brother of a very popular Mayor of one of the largest cities in Broward. Bernie won because HE busted his butt. I campaigned for Howard so I got to see Bernie at 2 or 3 functions a night. Never did I see Kevin with Bernie at an event. Ilona who ran Peter Bober's campaign and Jack Schrifel ran the campaign and guided Bernie to victory. If it is as easy as everyone says it is i.e. just be a female with a jewish last name why do you need Kevin or any other campaign person just throw your name on the ballot and go for it? Of course this time the only low hanging fruit is Rebollo. The theory that appears to have been created last election has not been tested against an anglo candidate.

This post sounds vaguely anti-judge in general, which is misleading. Many judges are doing a good job and should be supported, especially if they get opposition from a lesser qualified candidate. If you check his contributions you will find Kevin Kulik listed as a supporter of Julio Gonzalez, who was doing a great job. In the criminal defense field, the problem has been with an increasingly partisan JNC nominating ,and the governor appointing, some individuals with obviously pro-government ideologies instead of the most qualified candidate. A top defense attorney with 20+years experience is typically passed over for a prosecutor with much less experience. Party affiliation appears to have been given great weight by the last two governors. Defense attorneys get tired of informing clients that the judge will not actually be a neutral detached magistrate,as they are sworn to be, but more of a "prosecutor with a robe on". Each judge is entitled to their own philosophy, but the citizens of Broward are quite a bit different than residents of, say, Pensacola. They reserve the ultimate determination. Almost every judge awards "certificates" to jurors in the hope that the judge's name will be remembered at election time. Many ignore the much larger constituency sitting right in front of them, the defendants and their families. In Broward, about 110,000 people or more are processed through the county jail system every year. Add Notices to Appear, criminal traffic cases, and juveniles and you will realize that almost ten percent of Broward's population is charged with a crime every year. Extrapolate that for five years and you see why Mike Satz loses such a high percentage of votes to even a token opponent. Undoubtedly, more judges will receive opposition than in the past including those who do not deserve it. This will result in some inequities, but it should also result in a greater degree of neutrality and respect focused on those accused of crimes. Anyone attempting to obtain a judicial appointment should consider that they may well be running for office very soon after being picked, especially if they intend to become a rubber stamp for the government.

It's amazing to see the exchanges about judges as if anyone outside of the Courthouse crowd cares. The dynamic has certainly changed with sitting judges drawing opposition and losing, just like Dade County. Is that what we want? On the other hand "judges for life" created most of the problems we all face now. It really has more to do with the atmosphere fostered by bench and bar alike. They can post all of the "professionalism" signs they want and bitch and moan about the lack of civility and ethics but until everyone gets on the same page and stops biting each other's neck for blood it wont change. There'll will always black robe fever. Can't help it, some people let it go to their head but the Bar can at least tone it down and start acting like gentlemen (applies to both sexes)and then you'll see some changes. Unfortunately the large number of lawyers in Broward and the increasingly tightening market will make the chase for dollars the prime motivating factor and that's also at the root of the problem as well. Too many lawyers, too few clients, too little money. An uptick in the economy will help but "can't we all just get along?" Getting Jackie Boy into quarantine is also a pretty good start.
