THURSDAY NOTES
"Maybe we'll have to buy a horse" - yes, the comments about Judge Mel Grossman spying on Shelly Golding once upon a time turn out to be true. Click here for a Sun-Sentinel report from 1990, detailing the whole sordid affair. After two videotaped meetings and a recorded phone call between Grossman and Golding, the SAO cleared Golding. Grossman was never a suspect ...
It's been three months - the Walt Disney car crash news broke way back on July 27th. Still no arrests, no charges. In fact, the Mousketeers are still on paid suspension, taking the Fifth on various depos when called. We wonder, what kind of magic pixie dust is up Satz and Donnelly's sleeves this time? Will these guys be charged with anything at all? And whatever happened to former ASA David Braun's case? Remember the horrible Probable Cause Affidavit from May 29th? Still no charges showing for Braun or his brother Derek, five months later. Just imagine what would happen to an African-American male who allegedly jumped a cop from behind. They wouldn't even let him do diversion, and they'd convict him, even if he was a first time felony offender. Only in Broward do the "haves" get away with, well, anything, while the "have-nots" get both barrels of Satz's shotgun in the face for even the silliest offenses. What a county! (thanks to Bob Norman for the double barreled reference)
PC Of The Week - click here for a little beauty featuring a deaf girl who gets treated with anything but kid gloves by the police. The incident started as an alleged domestic violence assault, but that charge was reportedly dropped, leaving Battery On A Leo and Resisting With Violence felony charges before Judge Levenson. We're told she speaks like a person who has been deaf for most of her life, yet she's accused of "screaming" all kinds of offensive things. She also was allegedly cuffed behind her back, a big no-no, as anyone who signs will tell you, not to mention any civil rights lawyer worth his or her salt. We hear the police have actually made the effort to go back and apologize to the Defendant, and everyone is optimistic that the State will be dropping this turkey at least to a misdemeanor, even quicker than you can say "David Braun".
Meet the Gov. Weds. - The six individuals picked by the JNC to replace Judge Robert "No Apologies" Carney, Julio Gonzalez, Maria Schneider, Raag Singhal, Chris Pole, Michael Usan and David Haimes, will interview with Charlie Crist in Tallahassee on November 4th. It's believed the names to replace Vitale won't go up until the 13th, after the JNC has some sort of feedback regarding the Carney six. Stay tuned ...
Class is in Session - this time featuring Civics 101 Professor Paul Backman. Apparently, the Judge's traditional lickity split Voir Dire (name, rank, and have you ever been arrested?) has recently been getting longer and longer, currently stretching past the one hour mark. It now reportedly includes questions regarding the importance of judicial elections, and the central role judges play in the lives of everyday people. Why the beefed-up Voir Dire? We can't say for sure, but it probably won't hurt the other guy named Backman, who just so happens to be running for County Court next year, to have potentially thousands of jurors taking Professor Backman's course (under subpoena, no less). Of course, Judge Dale Cohen could probably teach a class of his own, if he so desires ....
Speaking of County Court Races - have you heard the news? Most people have, but for those that haven't, make sure to tune in tomorrow for a very interesting candidate's announcement (Ross Perot, anyone?). As much as we hate/can't keep a secret, we've been sworn to secrecy until the time is just right. Luckily, the right time appears to be tomorrow morning. Of course, we still can't get anyone to confirm a really big story that we're absolutely dying to break, and it actually kind of hurts to hold that one in. Patience was never our strong point ...
Bits & Pieces - The PD's Office is feverishly pouring over a ton of new Brady stuff recently exhumed via Public Records Requests; Fafone & Kenny granted bond this morning (Fafone waived extradition despite a $100K bond, and Kenny will post a $75,000 bond) (Haddad & Hurley); Boomer's interview with Judge Hurley "Warmth, wit (and order) in the court"; Shane Gunderson: profile of a pioneer (PD employee); Friday Time Waster - JJF '68 (live vocal).
See ya!

Judge Lee can be easily beat.
Is that picture supposed to be Lee Jay with his head exploding?
If memory serves Golding was shooting for judge when the news broke. He bowed out and Frusciante got in.
Mel Grossman - There's a guy who deserved opposition 20 years ago.
Why is that article about a man throwing feces in court news? Judges do it all the time.
Julio... is that plane ticket to tallahassee refundable?
When scotty makes the phone call for you, I wonder if charlie already has his number blocked?
Now you and pedro can open up a firm together. good luck!
Lee out of the closet. Imagine that.
