DEFEDE GETS THE GOODS ON ADDERLEY

Carney served - we're told Judge Carney was finally served today for depo in the civil suit brought by the estate of Frank Lee Smith.

Here's what
Rumpole had to say regarding our previous post on the subject:

"Will there be a rebuttal period during Judge Carney's "accomplishments and career" dinner, and if so, will a séance be conducted so Frank Smith can give the opposing view point? ...

While careful readers may have noticed a slight (just slight) disdain we have for the judiciary North of the Border, we're still not so sure it is appropriate to publicize Judge Carney's retirement dinner in this manner. Somewhere buried within all of those wrongful convictions and withheld evidence and innocent men on death row, we imagine the man must have done something right that merits a pat on the back and a hearty good luck as he heads into retirement. But then again, that's more care and concern than the Judge/prosecutor ever showed for Frankie Lee Smith."

Our response: The Broward County Justice Association published the flyer on the world wide web.  That's where we found it.  Click on the "Annual Judges' Night" link to see it in all its glory.  Is there really anything wrong in linking to it?  Don't they want it out there for every John, Christopher and Anthony to see?

(We still love ya Rumpole - who else could have come up with the séance crack?)

CBS 4
Rothstein Air: Do Cops Fly Free?

"But the revelation that three of Broward County's most powerful lawmen flew with Rothstein to a football game is further evidence of Rothstein's cozy relationship with both the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Last week and again on Monday, CBS4 News asked Adderley to provide proof that he paid for the items given to him by Rothstein. Adderley refused.

Monday, the FBI also got involved. CBS4 News has learned from a law enforcement source in Broward that Chief Adderley met with federal agents for more than an hour.

Adderley has not been charged with a crime and he is not the target of the investigation. But the feds are reportedly trying to understand the relationship between Fort Lauderdale's top cop and the man now accused of the largest Ponzi scheme in South Florida history.

Of particular interest were the photos released last week showing Adderley and Rothstein at a traffic accident over the summer involving Rothstein's friend -- cigar shop owner Muhammad "Moe'' Sohail

One of the big mysteries is why Chief Adderley showed up.

Adderley has refused to say what caused him to go to the scene of a routine traffic accident, nor would he say who called him.

But CBS4 News has learned that it was Rothstein who called the police chief ...

Merricks and Sohail were driving home after eating at Rothstein's Bova Prime restaurant. Merricks was cited for violating the restrictions on her license.

There is no evidence that Adderley interfered in the investigation.

But his presence at the crash site, standing alongside Rothstein, continues to raise doubts about the impartiality of the accident probe. And the simple fact that Rothstein could pick up his phone and summon the police chief is just as troubling."

JAABLOG'S CONTINUING JUDICIAL, SAO AND POLICE OVERSIGHT COURTESY OF MIKE SATZ

Mike Mayo: Roots of South Florida corruption

"Lax enforcement. Broward State Attorney Mike Satz hates being labeled soft on corruption, but the reality is that in his 33 years in office there’s been an atmosphere of permissiveness, especially for elected officials. Satz travels in the same circles, uses the same political operatives and depends on the same campaign contributors as much of Broward's Democratic political machine. He hasn't been one to upset the apple cart. It’s usually fallen on the feds to do the heavy lifting in recent decades, whether it’s been John Lomelo in Sunrise or former Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne.

Satz’s office has gotten a lot more active in recent years, winning a corruption conviction against Hollywood Commissioner Keith Wasserstrom (the first jury conviction of an elected official during Satz's tenure) and bringing charges against County Commissioner Joe Eggelletion (after the feds stung him). There have also been charges filed against Al Capellini and Steve Gonot, former Deerfield Beach politicians.

The recent burst of activity has come after the feds began their latest sting operations (in 2006). Coincidence? Or has the feds' presence in town lit a fire under Satz?"

LOOK AT HIM MR. SATZ

Attention Process Servers
- if you're having trouble serving Judge Carney a subpoena for deposition in the
civil suit filed on behalf of Frank Lee Smith (an innocent man executed by the State of Florida), go to the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six on Thursday night.  Carney's "accomplishments and career" are being honored as part of the Broward County Justice Association's "Annual Judges' Night".  It'll cost $90.00 to get in, but you'll find him there, being lauded by Chief Judge Tobin, the SAO's Chuck Morton, and Kelly Hancock.  Click here for the flyer. Word of advice - don't mention Anthony Caravella, John Purvis, Christopher Clugston or Bob Norman  to Carney. You don't want to spoil the festivities, after all ...

Troubling? No, it's just how things go on here in Broward. It's all about who you know and keeping a score card on who owes who what apparently.

Why doesn't Adderley just tell the truth about this? Why hide behind a badge? I'd say this is pretty indicative of what happens all the time in Good Old Broward where it doesn't take much to keep local officials in your pocket as we've seen repeatedly.

The public is owed an explanation in this incident though. And it needs to come from Chief Adderley himself.

It must be nice to have the cheif's cell phone number handy at all times, in case you get in trouble. It must be even more nice if the chief not just answers the call but comes a running too. And finally it must be super nice to have a State Attorney look away.

Nice to see you took down the posts about Jay Hurley's wedding. So let me get this straight, a public figure gets married and no one can discuss it? Personally, I could care less about Hurley getting married but to pull the posts, sure looks like Jay is awfully touchy these days.

Sure would be interesting to see just who has traveled at any time with Rothstein, whetehr they be public officials or not. Surely it wouldn't be all to difficult to find out just who went where on a chartered flight.

I didn't see the post about Hurley's wedding, but I heard about it. Some poster not only revealed that Hurley was get married (no big deal), but also the time, date and location of the wedding.
One would have to ask what the purpose of broadcasting such information to the general public would be. It seems clear that the person posting the wedding info. was trying to intimidate the judge. Also, I was told that subsequent posts were merely objecting to the initial post about the wedding.
The assertion that Hurley is touchy is out of context.
This is about trying to intimidate and threaten a public official.
BSO and FDLE already have the IP address.

I saw the post about the wedding. Whoever put it up is an absolute idiot. It claimed that some high level politicians would be there, and suggested that people crash. It's pretty obvious that for security reasons, any politicians will get FDLE on it. Whoever posted it is looking at criminal charges. Federal criminal charges.
