WHO IS CARLOS LLORENTE?
Broward County Bar Association President Carlos Llorente won't call us back ...*UPDATE* - DBR: Broward Bar considers conduct of JAABlog
All we know:
-He doesn't practice criminal law (apparently, he's an insurance defense lawyer).
-He wants a new courthouse.
-He's picking an ill-advised fight with JAABLOG (See Friday's DBR).
Anyone else with info on Llorente, please post a comment.
"In order for Senator Joseph McCarthy to succeed,
it took weeny organizations to hold up the wrongdoer,
while casting stones at the whistle blower."
-Public Defender Howard Finkelstein
Sun Sentinel Editorial - "Judge Gardiner better have good explanation for this".
"All you can say about Gardiner is, what could she have been thinking? Anyone who has heard the ground rules after showing up for jury duty, or who has at least watched a law or crime drama on TV, knows such contacts are a no-no ...
Gardiner will have a chance to give her side, but the accusations, if true, show a serious lack of judgment and disregard for judicial decorum, along with a breach of trust. The public has every right to expect that judges are not involved in any kind of personal relationship with attorneys appearing in front of them. The fact it was a death penalty case only makes the accusations more troubling and impossible to look past.
All of which makes you long for the days in Broward when courthouse antics just produced bad punch lines."
Plan for what should be your golden years - the powers that be are obviously mighty unhappy that their judges are being challenged across the board in 2010, and they're going on the offensive by trying to scapegoat the Blog for our role in helping to uncork thirty plus years of anger and frustration. Coupled with the JQC and corruption scandals, and the floundering "new courthouse at the expense of our schools" project, they're obviously shaken. So let's keep up the pressure. There are still some judges without opposition (see Wednesday Notes, below), which means incumbent fundraising efforts can be strained even further. If you haven't thought of running this year, please reconsider, since we need your help in stamping out anarchy and restoring American, democratic values to Broward. Also - don't rush to judgment that you can't afford to live on a judge's salary. As previously reported, a single six year circuit term is worth nearly $29,000.00 annually from the age of sixty-two until death. All aboard!
Bulldog: Satz, Finkelstein fight yields change at the courthouse (unabridged)
"Finkelstein still contends Satz favors the influential and the police over the average citizen when it comes to charging decisions. Satz calls that assertion “false and irresponsible.”

Is Llorente a Judge Gardiner fan? If he is, a lot of questions would be answered.
Speaking of Gardiner, that editorial makes for one heck of an endorsement for anyone who challenges in 2012 (assuming Gardiner is still in office and allowed to run again).
Is Llorente friends with Juan Arias, former Bar prosecutor and Gardiner chum?
Never heard of him.
Watch. Seidman's wife is going to run against him for the BCBA presidency now. Don't mess with JibJab.
Bill
As usual why didn't you post the article and links to Chaz Stevens JQC complaint and Hurley for misleading camapign stuff or how Tobin and Rieman screwed him when he tried to make a simple request for Seidman's JA campaign related email. It appears that it's just transparancy and fairness when it not your friends. Chaz reminds me of how you and this blog were at inception before you started making deals to protect the Judges who bowed to you. You are a sellout just like the rest of them in the courthouse.
Lorente is close with Gardiner and I think he ran against Schreiber over a grudge for PD a number of years ago. Went down in flames. Thinks he's a tough guy.
How these idiots can think a new courthouse is more important than out educational system for our youth shows just how out of touch they are.
Llorente is a fine lawyer who earns an honest living and tries to give back to the legal community. As straight a lawyer as you will find.
How does Llorente "give back" to the legal community by fighting to preserve what a lot of people think is a corrupt system?
Just another wannabe politican. Didn't he run for office once, or twice with no brass ring?
I have to agree with the poster above regarding the blog's lack of coverage of a JQC Complaint being filed against Hurley for promting a "re-election" campaign and regarding the 17th Circuit's abhorrent action in preventing a public record's request into the improper campaigning from courthouse property and computers coming from Lee Seidman's office.
BOTH of these stories are worthy of mention in one of the front page's compilations of stories.
Chaz Stevens may just be another activist blogger (hmm, sounds like Bill), but Chaz has focused a lot of attention on various city commissions and now he's directing his type of activism towards our courts.
Bill, I thought the more people that shine a light on this place the better? Or is that just when the light doesn't shine on the wrongdoing of your friends?
Be careful 9:10. You don't want big bad Carlos Llorente coming after you!!!!
Let me see: Insurance defense lawyer and wants a new courthouse? I've heard this before. Why is it that those that want to needlessly spend tax payer money when teachers are being laid off during a deep recession all seem to be plugged into the right receptacles?
You've got it wrong. He didn't run against Schreiber for PD. Didn't he run for judge or something?
The Chief Judge and Rieman thwarting an investigation into a JA using her computer to do campaign stuff and a JQC complaint for election law violations and you are going on about the Broward Bar Association. Oh I forgot, Hurley and Seidman are your friends. For those who want unbiased news check out the links below

llorente was an asa under satz.
A former Satz robot still following orders. He probably thinks Mike's pals Ana and Howard are getting a raw deal too. They really stick together, don't they? It's not surprising he's against free speech either.
Llorente lost a race for Circuit Judge around 1988/1990. Marc Gold beat him for an open seat. Llorente is actually a fairly decent guy, albeit totally from the corporate-friendly ranks of the traditional legal establishment.
I think Llorente also served on a JNC. The contested elections are probably personal to him just as his friendship with Gardiner makes his motives suspect in my mind.
Wow.Gold beat him? I can't see Gold taking a public stand against the 1st Amndmnt.
Is it just me or does the headline of the editorial sound like Ricky Ricardo talking?
Warning to all lawyers posting at JAABLOG:
Don’t say I didn’t warn you all, and Bill Gelin as well, over a year ago as to what it now about to happen. For those with bad memories, allow me to refresh them:
Sean Conway was targeted by The Florida Bar for speaking the truth about Judge Aleman. The disciplinary effort against him was unconstitutional, as it violated the First Amendment speech rights of Mr. Conway.
This blog and the lawyers who post at it lifted nary a finger to assist Mr. Conway in any fashion whatsoever. The reason no one here helped him is that you figured the Bar crocodile would eat you last. Well it’s getting ready to do just that, because nobody here stood up to The Bar, including Mr. Gelin.
That is PRECISELY why I pushed The Florida Bar on this by pointing out that if Mr. Conway was guilty of speech violative of Bar Rule 4-8.2(a), then the lawyers who run this blog are guilty of the same. Why? Because Bar rule 4-8.4(a), which is an aiding and abetting rule, says that any lawyer that assists another lawyer in violating any Bar Rule, whether it be the speech code rule of 4-8.2(a) or any other rule, is equally culpable.
So, when Bill Gelin posts Conway’s allegedly unethical comments here, he is on the hook, if The Bar is going to apply its Rules fully and fairly. Further, any time Bill Gelin allows the posting of any of the other anti-judge comments here, then he is on the hook for those as well. And by the way, The Bar, under current case law, can find out who the anonymous posters of these comments are as well. If you think they cannot, then you haven’t been following the case law as to blogging lately.
And the point is this, which I figured out well over a year ago and which all of you here, including Mr. Gelin, are about to find out: The Florida Bar is going to come after ALL of you, including Mr. Gelin, for the anti-judge, anti-Satz comments at this blog, simply because The Bar thinks it can be the speech and thought police in this state.
You all, then, in not coming to the defense of Sean Conway, en masse, as I did in filings with the Florida Supreme Court, have opened the door to what is about to happen here at the expense of all of us and at the expense of free speech.
It is incredible that none of you has figured this out, although cowardice generally requires no explanation. Jack Thompson

I declare shenanigans on your nitwittery.
You need to relax. I suggest an afternoon with an X-box 360 and GTA4.
crazy jack t actually makes sense no one came to sean's defense and look now
I'm a bit confused how the Bar is going after me... A private citizen... I don't drink so therefore I don't frequent bars.
Give 'em hell Jack.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.
Its true. How can the Bar determine who is a lawyer and who is not a lawyer? They don't have IP Addresses and they need subpoenas to determine who owns the IP too. Even if they could trace it, what if it isn't a lawyer but a citizen with an inalienable right to call a judge whatever he wants?
The Broward Bar “professionalism” section should do something more productive than meet to decide whether to chastise Bill (since they have no real power and that’s all they can do). They should focus on the real issues in the courthouse: you’ve got judges canoodling with prosecutors, a Chief that’s out of control and a dozen more misfits wearing black robes. How about the bar advocate for improvements at the courthouse instead of trying to kill the messenger? Or is it just that these so-called bar leaders have made their deals with the devil already and are now just doing their master’s bidding? Epic fail for the Bar.
Llorente gave $100 to loser Dijols in 2008
Checking others for you
If you want to help the community, why don't you have the BCBA start doing easy to read Bar Polls on judges performance? That would help the voters, no?
Let me explain this so that even you criminal defense lawyers in Broward can understand it:
Tobin and others are agitating for The Florida Bar to go after JAABLOG and the lawyers who post here. They are going to shut this blog down and discipline Gelin and anyone else they can get their hands on. Remember Sean Conway?
To find out who the lawyers are who are posting anti-judge comments here, all The Bar has to do is get a subpoena issued by a Bar Referee in a disciplinary case filed against Gelin, and the entity that operates the JAABLOG will have to cough up the IP addresses of the posters. If you think not, then you're dreaming.
I was disbarred for telling the truth about a corrupt Alabama judge and a constantly out-of-control Dade judge by the name of Ron Friedman. What I said about him the Third DCA had also said, but, hey, I was just a lawyer pointing out that some judges are jerks.
All of you supposedly liberal nitwits here who didn't see any reason to defend Conway, who delighted in The Bar's enforcement of its unconstitutional speech codes against me are now about to get a lesson in what happens when good men do nothing. Evil triumphs. The evil here is The Florida Bar. Wise up. Jack Thompson
