Rocque out, but Luzzo will still have to earn it ... Attorney Mickey Rocque is dropping out of the race for the circuit seat currently occupied by Judge Jack Luzzo. According to Kevin Kulik, however, another candidate will replace Rocque, possibly by the end of the day. Kulik also reports that other candidates will be announcing this week as well. As for Mickey, he says his practice is booming (read $$), so he's looking forward to 2012 instead.
Former Chief Judge Dale Ross making noise? - that's right, JAABLOG favorite Dale Ross has reportedly been telling people incumbent judges wouldn't be facing challenges if he was still the Chief Judge. Really? We find that hard to believe, since many folks believe the current effort to restore judicial elections as the Florida Constitution intended is largely because of his past leadership, coupled with the ascension of his young daughter to the county bench over candidates with much greater experience. Message to Dale: if you were still Chief Judge, we think it would be even easier to beat the incumbents. Advice to Dale: you might want to spend your time preparing for 2012. If your rumored retirement doesn't materialize, you have a 100% JAABLOG guarantee that you'll have an opponent.

Here are the real reasons why people are running.
1) After 2008 people with Jewish names beat Hispanics.
2) This is Broward the most Democratic County in Florida and since our current Judges were appointed by a Republican Gov, challengers feel this benefits them.
3) Bad Economy, most or all of the criminal lawyers running their practices are in the toilet and/or cant afford health insurance.
So if you are Jewish + your practice sucks + you opponent was appointed by Bush or Crist = the risk of 6k for the filing is worth the reward of a 130-140k a year job with a great pension and health benefits.
When the economy was good and the SPD's were flowing why didn't the current crop of criminal defense lawyers run? They were making good money, duh.
As for Dale, Bill get some meds for your obsession. If Dale and or his daughter was the reason for the challengers how come they never say or allude to it on the stump?
As the one who created and runs this blog, you better than anyone knows its about perception and what have you done for me lately. Tobin and Tutor the gays at the top of the Circuit all of this falls on them.

People will start jumping races, friends will be up against friends, and people will decide whether they're going to stick it out or decide that 50 people running for judge is just too much of a mess to deal with.
All this for a job you should be able to equal in salary in the private sector without all that much effort as an experienced attorney.

Wow! I can not believe this! It is obvious to me the broward bar is basically being used as a tool by the judiciary. I remember all the letters from the cj wanting to take over the duties of the clerk being in there last year. So now he goes off on some rant in the paper and the next thing you know the bar is coming to his rescue?? What a stupid move. All it will do is bring more attention to the blog and the problems in the courthouse. Now we have threatened cuts to our schools and the cj on a board that basically pushed a new courthouse on the taxpayers. take all of this along with all the corruption in this county PLUS all the antics the judges created themselves in the paper, this is really the last thing Tobin wants. I think most judges are professional and do their jobs, but there are some that really should not be on the bench. All picking a fight with a blog will do is shine a brighter light on the courthouse. The voters are not going to buy the judges crying that they should not be portrayed negatively in the blog. Picking a fight with the blog really looks desparate.

Attorney Carlos Llorente Under Scrunity by Travelers for JAABlog Censorship Stunt
Miami attorney Jack Thompson just got off the phone with Travelers Insurance Company Senior Vice President/Chief Compliance Officer/Group General Counsel David Baker. Mr. Baker included in the phone conference a Ms. Melissa Rodriguez, also an attorney.
The topic was Travelers’ employee, Ft. Lauderdale lawyer Carlos Llorente’s, “hearing” into the activities of the Broward law blog known as JAABlog, run by Ft. Lauderdale attorney William Gelin, scheduled appropriately for April Fools Day.
As a result of Thompson’s call, Mr. Llorente now has “trouble” and “worry” much as the shaggy dog in the now famous Travelers ad.
It seems that Mr. Llorente has gone off the Travelers reservation in his well-publicized foray into thought and speech police work, as he did not clear this exercise in fascism with the corporate higher-ups at The Travelers, which he is apparently required to do.
Mr. Baker was told of the whistle-blowing function by JAABlog as to government corruption, particularly judicial corruption, and he seemed particularly concerned that Llorente lists himself as a member of The Florida Bar Professional Ethics Committee, while at the same time noting his employment by The Travelers.
Mr. Baker was so concerned about what he was hearing about Mr. Llorente’s undisclosed extracurricular activities that he dispatched the aforementioned Ms. Rodriguez to get right on this matter as Thompson’s and Baker’s conversation proceeded.

Good one Bill, your blurb from the Nevins article should remind the Judges what it was like to have aChief Judge who had your back and fworked to protect you, unlike Tobin who leaves them hanging. That alone will put Dale back in power in 2010.
