Senior Judge Army - senior judges are back in action. Rumor has it Joel Lazarus or Kathy Ireland will be covering Gary Cowart's division until Lisa Trachman's successor is appointed, starting mid-April. Lazarus and Peter Weinstein will be covering for Bernie Bober, until Bober is fully recovered from recent back problems. Get those motions filed before Cowart disappears to civil, and continue those cases until Bober returns. Lastly, of course, get well Bernie!
In with the out crowd - The following politicos received invitations to Gardiner's fiftieth birthday party last weekend, and many attended: Mily Rodriguez-Powell, Ken Jenne, Barbara Miller, Michele Towbin-Singer, Marina Garcia-Wood, Susan Lebow, Ilona Holmes, and both Backmans. A grand time was had by all!
Congratulations! - Fort Lauderdale city prosecutor Scott Walker is moving on up. He has officially accepted an early retirement package, and an in-house counsel job with Amtech Security. The always sensible Walker will be missed, after many years of dedicated service. Well done!
Scott.....you are a class act and it has been a pleasure working with you all these years. Many prosecutors, both City and State have alot to learn from a guy like you. Good luck in your new endeavors and we all can only PRAY that whoever replaces you as City prosecutor lives up to your legacy!!

Scott is a great guy and I wish him well in his new career in-house (a great gig, no doubt).
Although I do need to put in my final dig. As a young lawyer, I had several cases involving the City of Fort Lauderdale that I thought were garbage and needed to be dismissed.
I went to a more seasoned attorney to ask him his advice on how to get a nolle prosse from the City of Fort Lauderdale.
His response -- "Just announce ready for trial"...

2. If you had ever asked a seasoned attorney what to do with a "garbage" case involving the City," (s)he would have told you, "talk to Scott, explain why the case is garbage and Scott will Nolle Pros."

Lets not forget the 'Probation sweeps"........... yet another local police tactic reserved for "the hood" where street level guys along with their probation officer counterparts engage in widespread local neighborhood harassment by unlawfully stopping, seizing, searching and mauling African males unfortunate enough to be out on the street or home with the door unlocked! This is a common practice that, i'm afraid Jack Seiler could care less about and writing him a letter regarding these unacceptable police practices is like asking Al Capone to help ferret out police corruption in Chicago. I can't tell you how much safer I feel as a Afro-american frequenting the "hood" now that Howie has sent out a piece of stationary AND a matching envelope in the "war" against abusive police practice and policy. Hey, look at the bright side,Finklestein's M.O. used to be going public and condemning the Broward bench for alleged and discriminatory comments like Lenny's infamous "hovel" quote to Greene's, 'NHI" comment. Is it just me or should HF not be fearlessly leading an active campaign, undertaken by his "soldiers" to take it to the state IN THE COURTROOMS OF BROWARD COUNTY BY GETTING HIS STAFF TO KICK SOME LAW ENFORCEMENT ASS VIA MOTIONS TO SUPPRESS AND OTHER (APPARENTLY OVER THE TOP) OUTSTANDING DEFENSE LAWYERING? If I'm Seiler,in all due respect, my response to Howie's atomic bomb of a letter would be to inquire as to " and exactly what are it you and your staff of 150 strong doing about iit? IS IT JUST ME????

Great letter by Finkelstein but it won't accomplish much with Seiler. I think Seiler gets support from FOP. Like any other politician, he's gonna tow the line. Sad, but true.

Ira deserves better than this. This is an outright attack on the defense bar that accepts SPD cases. I think this is basis for every SPD in front of Destry for disqualification if the attorney's are going to be concerned about getting paid or not if a case goes to trial. Characterizing this case as no more ordinary than what we do is an outright misrepresentation of reality. A dropsy case is ordinary, an attempted murder with williams rule evidence? Give me a better explanation than shame on you for accepting these cases and getting the short end of the deal from the state. I hope he gets what he deserves, Ira that is. Its time for Ira to be awarded the Gulkin award.

Sounds like Howard has taken to stereotyping all law enforcement just as he claims the stereotype all citizens. Could it be he has spent too much time listening to his clients who have obviously all been framed at the hands of corrupt officers and incompetent prosecutors? Why anyone would address Seiler a letter on this issue is beyond my understanding. That soaker doesn't concern himself with anything except putting up signs for his re-election. Can't Fort Lauderdale do better than some small time DB that keeps somebody like A-Herd employed so he can do his worm-work? That's gotta tell u something about just how worthless Seiler is.
