The face of "resisting arrest" in Satzland ...

Meet Veronica
- pictured above is Veronica Ekanem, a forty-six year old woman from Lauderdale Lakes.  Veronica was arrested last year April, for allegedly "interfering with the arrest of a co-defendant".  Police wrote in the probable cause affidavit that Ekanem "resisted all attempts to being placed into custody by grabbing the handcuffs and tensing and pulling her arms away", leading to her being "forcibly placed on the ground in order to handcuff her".  Further resistance by the handcuffed Ekanem when the officers tried to get her into the squad car caused police to once again "forcibly place(d) (Defendant) on the ground again".

According to the Broward Clerk's Office, Ekanem had no prior arrests, which still didn't stop Satz from filing charges without any SAO investigation of the accusations.  The State then refused to dismiss the charges, putting Ekanem through nearly a year of hell until they realized Ekanem couldn't be scared into taking a plea.  Charges were finally dropped last week, on the day of trial, after APD Taryn Green had blown-up the above booking photo for the jury's pleasure.

As Howard Finkelstein and his team point out in the media on nearly a daily basis, it's not easy being poor and African-American in Satzland.  These type of police abuse cases are routinely filed, elevating Assistant State Attorneys to accomplices in egregious civil and human rights violations.  Whether chewed up by a police dog, or beaten with old fashioned fists, the SAO's track record of filing charges to protect and shield officers is truly disturbing.  Let's hope Ekanem pursues her legal remedies, since it's a pretty safe bet the SAO has already buried this one as deeply as possible ...

"I'm considering it" - that's ASA Liz Scherer, on whether or not she'll be putting in to replace Lisa Trachman on the county court.  She'll have a pretty good shot at it, unless either of her two lawyer siblings also decide to apply.  Dad Bill Scherer's long-standing relationship to former client and current governor Rick Scott can't hurt, and you can bet Liz will still get out of committee even after JNC member Scherer Sr. recuses himself, Broward politics being what they are.  Definitely one to watch ...

Adios Bill! - Bill Haury has finally made it out of Mental Health and Drug Courts, heading over to Foreclosures.  We're hearing Michele Towbin-Singer as a possible replacement, with Mark Speiser, Marty Bidwill, and Phil Schlissel filling in until a successor is in place.  Haury will be missed.  He's a gentleman, fair, and never afraid to stand up to SAO excesses.  Well done!

The return of Peggy Gehl?
- rumor has it Peggy Gehl may also be reappearing in senior judge guise.  Time for Mexicans, Jamaicans, and Jewish people to file Motions To Disqualify ...

He shall no longer be called Michael Satz but rather Michael Stats. He's all about keeping up his corrupted numbers. As for the judiciary, you would think the black males judges would be above reproach but perpetuate the conundrum by sending a lot of minorities in the system.

Does being poor and black give you the right to interfere with another persons arrest? Does it give you the right to fight police officers? I guess now if anyone in a black neighborhood breaks the law we might as well look the other way and give them a pass because they are black and poor?

If the police are not suppose to touch a "poor black person" then here's a cost cutting measure for the city, STOP responding to calls in the black communities. After all why bother they are poor and black so they should not be arrested right? Watch them scream that the police are not there for them because they are "poor and black." Would it be ok if we just send black officers on the calls?

I agree! I feel like the minority without rights being white. I'm sorry, racism is bad but it applies to blacks as well, everyone is so afraid of having a black employee claim the f-ing race card if they don't do their jobs and are lazy, but white will get their sorry a$$'s kicked without delay. I for one am sick and tired of hearing about it.

I think its time us white folk start claiming reverse discrimination. This is just getting sick that the black keep playing the race card as a means to not be good citizens. Explain to me what you can accomplish because your black don't pity yourself because your black. Look at all of the famous black people in the world, how did they become famous, by playing the black card and expecting pity?

I am not saying only black people steal but I also will not say if my child gets caught stealing that she is only being arrested because she is white. The race card thing is really, really old. We all have the same opportunities as far as schools, churches, jobs etc. Get over it will ya and use another excuse like "I am a lazy person that has never made anything of myself."

This is not a police issue, per se.

This is a case filing problem.

Events often spiral out of control on the streets. The difference is in other counties they won't file it, or will quickly dismiss once the facts come out.

I have an idea that will settle this issue. How about not breaking the law no matter what color you are then you can't cry because you got arrested. You do the crime you do the time.

unfortunately there is a lot of separate truths to several conflicting comments and the SOW--whoops SAO. Blacks DO commit crimes and need to be punished as any other lawbreaker, INCLUDING white, cops and most of all, Satz. Black Perry Thurston is rank on the House Committee of Civil and Criminal Justice and says and does nothing despite the fact that it's his own black criminal defense CLIENTS who are the alleged singled out victims. but the othere facts also remail--cops cheat; cops lie; cops provoke and beat innocents; cops fabricate PC affidavits andcops even sometimes get it right. It's when they are protected the for exceeding tha the problem happens and Satz jumps at the opportunity to protect and defend those who get paid to protect and defend us and don;t and even flat out refuse, and when they might even try--the big SOW shuts them down by refusing to prosecute accordint to the laws the legislature passes and othere actualy making it a crime NOT to prosecute but for som alleged prosecutors manual that trumps the statutes.
But the good blakies get protected too, like chiefy Adderly's wife who actually DID try to kill a cop-Adderly as well as risked the safety of the neoghbors by running down the street when she missed, flining police issued bullets from a police revolver indiscriminately into occupied buildings. So some balck DO get a free pass and that is not called "racist' but equality.
Then we have to look at all the posts on this blog with pictures of white people similarly beaten--or rather basing a leo's fist and foot with their faces and ribs that blasts down the color polarization. BUT NEITHER side owns up to the brutality or racial realities or their own contradictions. Is the kettle calling the pot white?

the more the stay the same.

More than 10 years ago, I had a Batt Leo and Resisting Arrest with Violence. Client was a homeless man suffering from partial right side paralysis and no priors.

The officer (6'3", 250lbs and biceps like Hulk Hogan) claimed that the guy had kicked and smacked him with his right arm and leg.

Client wound up in the hospital with a busted lip, black eye and slight fracture of his cheekbone (if such a thing could be slight). The mug shot looked like this lady.

State offered breakdown to a MM and adj. time served. Client refused to take it. Blew up the mug shot and had it on a poster and 11x17s to give to each juror.

State couldn't get approval for a NP so we tried it.

Priest on the jury (foreperson) -- Client dragged himself up to the stand (showing his paralyzed right side) to testify and authenticate the picture.

Priest on the jury, 5 minute not gulty, and jurors came up to my client to apologize after they were excused.

Sick to my stomach that more than a decade later, nothing has changed at the SAO with these kinds of cases. Protect the cop, let the jury decide.

    BS.
