Title A Study In Avoidance
Type Digital Image
Cover Up? - lots of people are mighty upset about the way the alleged jury room frolics are being dealt with. BSO is acting as if nothing happened, which is calling into question the credibility of some good people. Tensions are also mounting inside a certain North Wing courtroom. Will the true facts come out, or will everything Browardly possible be done to avoid at least a week's worth of Jay Leno nationally televised monologue yuks? We'll certainly let you know what little we can find out, while the powers that be do their best to keep things safely under the covers ...
Where's Bobby Diaz? - our favorite free period pastime has developed into an entertaining game of cat and mouse. The picture above was taken Wednesday morning, after Diaz had once again sworn in a massive pool of voters/potential jurors. While it looks like he's leaving the jury room area, he's actually going back in, to avoid having his picture taken. Lawyer/photogs no longer need to speculate as to why Diaz stopped exiting through the main entrance of the jury room across the hall from large cafeteria windows, for as soon as he saw JAABCAM through the reinforced glass on the back door guarding the restricted jurors' area, he turned tail. In any event, Diaz's early rising for jury duty at 8:00 AM* must be taking a toll, since he took yet another afternoon off from court Wednesday, after disposing of a morning docket consisting of six arraignments and a change of plea.
The horse we're beating is way beyond dead, but shouldn't Peter Weinstein do something about Diaz's unwillingness or inability to properly manage his court time? How is it possible to have 140, 160, or even 200 cases on Thursday morning's calendar call dockets, while shutting down court so frequently during the rest of the week? Shouldn't more of those calendar calls be set down for hearings and trials? And with well over 1000 cases in the division, shouldn't Weinstein be monitoring Diaz's dockets, as Dale Ross once did over concerns regarding Larry Seidlin's productivity?
Some things never change, and it seems like Weinstein's chief judgeship campaign promises for a strong judiciary were mere lip service. Simply stated, the Broward judiciary will never be strong or earn the respect its good judges deserve, unless all judges are required to work full days and make themselves available to the community they serve ...
* Diaz dockets start at 9:00 AM or 9:30 AM
